External hard drive reading as media only on Xbox One X

I have a brand new from the box 2TB WD Black P50 Game Drive and when i first plugged it in with the USB 3.2 cable it said it was media only.

I've since then tried formatting in NTFS, exFAT, FAT32 and even partitioning without a format (RAW). It shows the same, media only, every time. I tried full shutdown, restart, and not a single thing has given me the option to format, from the Xbox, for use
with games and apps. It is certified and approved by Microsoft for the Xbox so idk what to do now. Please Help.

    :)

Have you tried it with another harddrive as well? This will tell us if it's the harddrive is the issue or if the Xbox itself has a read error. It should work if the harddrive meets all these requirements:

    1. It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    2. It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.
    3. It has a partition. Typically, drives should come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive for Xbox One, please refer to Part 2.
    4. No more than 3 storage devices are connected to the console at the same time. Xbox will recognize only 2 external drives at one time.
Since you got it from MS and it's "for" the Xbox I assume these are all correct for your drive. Make sure you have the partition on it (which is seems you have as well).

Check out these steps if you think all the above is correct: https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/xbox-one-external-hard-drive-format.html if
these don't work, the best thing to do is contact Microsoft and get the drive replaced. It's not uncommon that harddrives can be faulty (I've had a few new drives replaced in my time).

    Good luck!

Literally all i had to do was plug it in farther than it felt was safe.

I plugged it in and pushed harder and it slid in more.

It came with a USB 3.0 and i am using that straight into tthe xbox.

    It is 1.8 TB capacity.

    It has a partition.

I disconnected my original external hard drive before starting this process.

The hard drive i was using was working fine.

    Thank you for the response.

Im trying the program you linked now.

External Hard Drive read as media only

So I figured my situation out, and maybe it will help OP and others. I was connecting the hard drive with the USB extension cable that came with my hard drive, as my power outlet is a little far from the console. I figured out a way to get things a little
closer and not use the extension cord, and it worked just fine with formatting. My guess is that despite it being a USB 3.0 Drive, the extension cord that came with it was only 2.0.

External Hard Drive read as media only

I am having the exact same issue as OP. Just got a 5TB External Seagate USB 3.0 Drive. I've tried reformatting for NTFS, and nothing is working, the xbox is only reading it as for media, and won't give the option to format for games and apps.
