    External Hard Drive quit reading on my Xbox only?


    I have a 3tb WD My Book and it has suddenly stopped reading on my Xbox after a year of use. It registers on other Xbox's, but not my own. The USB slots are and always have been compatible until now. I've tried changing cords and using them in all three USB
    ports, and it will let me access all of my content already on it, but it wont show up on my settings or devices. I usually have a battery charger on the left hand side, which works just fine still. Would this be because my USB ports are overloaded when I try
    and hook up that much data, or would it be most likely to be a external error?

    Nevermind.

    I took the SSHD out of the enclosure and replaced the hard drive in my PS4 (increasing it's capacity from 500GB to 1TB). Then I took the 1TB external hard drive from my PS4 and made it the external hard drive for my Xbox and no longer have the issue.

    It seems it was either the SSHD or the enclosure that didn't seem to quite work right as an external hard drive on the Xbox. Either way problem solved.

    Is it possible to use an External Hard Drive with a Xbox 360? as my hard drive is quite fall and if you can use an external one which type can be used and can you just sort games on there that you dont really play but still want

    Using a portable HDD

    The small print at the bottom of the page that I linked for you mentions:

    "USB flash drive is not a hard drive."

    Xbox's connection with an external drive is read-only. You can only read files that are already on the drive after connecting. You can't save game files or anything else on the Xbox main drive onto an external hard drive.

    External Hard Drive read as media only

    So I figured my situation out, and maybe it will help OP and others. I was connecting the hard drive with the USB extension cable that came with my hard drive, as my power outlet is a little far from the console. I figured out a way to get things a little
    closer and not use the extension cord, and it worked just fine with formatting. My guess is that despite it being a USB 3.0 Drive, the extension cord that came with it was only 2.0.

    I am having the exact same issue as OP. Just got a 5TB External Seagate USB 3.0 Drive. I've tried reformatting for NTFS, and nothing is working, the xbox is only reading it as for media, and won't give the option to format for games and apps.
