External Hard Drive Question

Ok, I will keep it brief. I have an external hard drive I wanted to use for my xbox one games, however, after it formats and installs the games onto the external hard drive, can I not use that same drive on my laptop? I was hoping to have it for both cuz
I have files on my laptop I wanted to back up as well. Or do I have to purchase two separate external hard drives now?

Reason I am going to move my games and game save over to it so i can reformat the xbox 360 hdd. Because for some weird reason the internal hdd has some demos that show up and disappear on there on and was wondering if formatting the hdd would fix this problem?

Hi there.

I don't think you can because when you plug the drive into the console, the Xbox One will recognize that you've attached an external hard drive and will ask if you want to format it (and you need to if you want to use it with the console), which means that
the data on your drive will be erase.

Unfortunately the entire hard drive will be formatted for your Xbox only. You would have to purchase two separate hard drives for what you're trying to do.

 

An external is not all that necassary. I had a brand new WD 500GB laptop hardrive for a build I was going to do. All I did was buy a enclosure for it (SIIG JU-SA0H11-S1) for $30 from Frys electronics and bam. Instant hard drive. Works perfect.

My burning question is this....

I had a 500 GB xboxone. today I traded it in for the elite xboxone. (love the controller btw). Well I had a bunch of saves from my old xboxone on my external (western digital) I put there since I knew I was going to get rid of that system. Today I get home.
crack open the elite. hook up my external and then I realize I couldn't get to load my saved data. I tried to get back to my fallout 4 but the elite system didn't want to show the thumbnails of the saves I have. Instead it just showed the percentage that its
there and used. and yes I used the cloud but the cloud didn't have all my saves up to date for FO4 progress. I'm a day and some hours off. I'm back to level 28. I was at level 31 before smdh

but anyway I'm wondering is this situation stupid to where my external ONLY remembers my old xboxone? and cant get the elite to 100% get to its contents? Or theres something wrong with this elite system and I should turn it back in?

because I'm wondering if its jacked up to where externals ONLY work for that system you formatted for. Example: you buy an xboxone. you use the external for it. save stuff. the xboxone dies. you get a NEW xboxone and then use the external but it don't work
for the new one because it only agrees with the one before. Is that's how that works?

I'm baffled on this
