USB External Drive and Internal Drive Question

Hello guys and gals I have a question

I am about to get a new 1TB USB 3.0 external Hard drive and my question is

After I setup my usb external hard drive does the xbox one still use the internal drive ?

I am a little OCD about the life span of hard drives and thought by plugging in an external drive it will not use the internal drive as much if all my data is on the external .

what I would like to know is does the xbox one still use the internal drive just for the OS / Firmware and nothing else if I have a external hooked up and am I correct to think that by keeping all my games and content on an external drive it will help keep
the ware and tare down on the internal drive ?

thanks I know this may sound crazy and I prob have nothing to worry about . just something that I think about

    thanks for any input.

External Hard drive question about the Xbox One .

    Hello,

    Thanks for the support message.

As long as the HD meets the following requirements, it should work:

For an external storage drive to save games and apps from Xbox One, it must meet the following requirements:

    • It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    • It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.
    • It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Devices that don’t meet these requirements will be treated as media storage, such as for music or video. For more information, see How to manage storage on Xbox One.

More info: Troubleshoot External Storage Drive Detection

Should you have any other concerns, feel free to post back.

    Cheers!

    Hello there,

Thank you for posting on Xbox Forums. As previously mentioned by our Ambassador's in regards to your question about the External Hard Drive for your Xbox 360, you will need to get an External that is compatible with the Xbox one. The external hard drive
that you have for your 360 will not be compatible with the Xbox one. If you would like more info on

Question about a xbox one external hard drive

No worries. Just remember that the drive needs to be USB 3.0 compatible and can range in size from 256 GB - 16 TB. You can also have two drives connected at the same time for even more storage.

Question about a xbox one external hard drive

Never mind. I just bought a 5 tb hard drive on amazon. Didn't know it didn't have to be xbox one specific.
