    External Hard drive problem.

So first of all I have no idea if this is the right place for this so sorry if it's not.

I have a seagate expansion desktop drive that I have owned (and have used) for about a year and a half but just lately it refuses to work with my Xbox one.

While the light is flashing as far as I know the hard drive should not work whilst a solid light should mean it is working properly but for me this has been the complete opposite. The drive will only be recognised when the light is flashing.

My problem is that as of late it seems to have decided that it won't recognise the hard drive at all often for hours at a time once I switch my Xbox off and/or sometimes during a game which is obviously very frustrating.

Bearing in mind I know almost nothing about these kind of things and I currently cannot afford to repair or replace it can anybody suggest a solution?

    :)

do you have that box checked that says "turn off external devices on standby" or something like that? That might be the issue.

The first thing you can try is giving your console a
    power cycle
. This simply involves holding the power button for 10 seconds, allowing the console to turn off. Then turn it back on again.

If the Xbox One is still unable to detect the drive, you'll then want to try connecting the drive to a Windows PC and reformatting it (as NTFS). Note: this will
completely erase everything on the drive. Once reformatted, you can reconnect it to the Xbox, set it up, and proceed to reinstall your games again.

One way to detect if the hard drive is dead is to put your ear close to it and check if it's making a pattern of rhythmic clicking noises. That indicates that the drive is likely dead. If the reformat process on the PC freezes, or if you can't even get the
drive detected on the PC, then the drive is indeed dead.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have already tried the power cycle method to no avail how exactly do I format it?

Until yesterday it was still making noises now however it seems to be silent so I guess it's beyond fixing but I don't really have any other options right now.

When you first connected the external hard drive to the Xbox One, were you prompted to format the drive?

I'm thinking that it might not be a compatible drive.

    Run through this troubleshooter.

Yes I was. It's definitely compatible because it's listed on the website as compatible. And like i said I've been using it no problem for ages

    Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear that the issue is persistent on the External Hard Drive.

Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a PC?

Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

If the problem persists, I recommend to try a different external hard drive on the Xbox if possible. One thing we want to make sure, Are the ports on the Xbox One functioning?

    Let us know.

    Game pass downloads

Do other games you own that aren't from game pass have the same problem? Do you have an external hard drive. If a game I install to my external hard drive is very laggy I will move it to my internal hard drive which usually fixes the problem.
