External hard drive problem

This is regarding my external hard drive which I've had for several months with next to no problems. I'm constantly moving my xbox one around and I have to unplug and replug my external hard drive into my xbox. I did the exact same thing I do every time
I move my xbox one, but for some reason it didn't detect my external hard drive. I didn't realize this until I begin playing fallout 4 when it said I need an update (I had installed all current updates at the time), so I start the update. I begin to freak
out because I thought there something wrong with the hard drive. I restart my xbox and it then detected the external hard drive. Then the update (which I already had on the external hard drive) was still downloading. It stayed at 0% for 10 minutes, so I decided
to uninstall the game and reinstall it( I have the disc version. I do a method in which I go offline to install the game and download the update later. I start to download the updates when I go back online, but it keeps saying "installation stopped." I don't
know whether this has to do with my internet or whether there is another problem. Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem and prevent it from happening in the future?

do you have that box checked that says "turn off external devices on standby" or something like that? That might be the issue.

My WD my book 3tb won't install games while in standby mode but it will if i leave it on. All the games download perfectly on my internal drive through.

I wouldn't start any game until your console reads the external drive if then check your Settings - System - storage to make sure it's connected i noticed for my console the 2 USB ports on the back don't detect it which is fine i use the one on the side
so clear the systems cache by:
support.xbox.com/.../power-cycle-console and try it again see if the update works if not pause the update better yet delete the game clear the cache and then re-install it and i know it'll be long but it will most likely fix it!
