External hard drive - powered drive required?

Just been reading about external hard drives for Xbox One, but cannot see any info on whether a self-powered drive is required, or can a drive safely draw power from the Xbox One? Anybody know?

    :)

    USB Hubs and Xbox One

Works fine for me, non powered one with a Keyboard, Skylanders Portal and Powered External Drive connected.

Make sure its a USB 3.0 hub and you'll be fine, also if you're NOT using powered external drives, id recommend a powered hub.

Your External Device Is Now Ready, even though I was playing a game off the External Drive that was already ready??!!

    Pain Reigns,

Are you using a self powered external drive or one that draws power from the USB? I know that some non-self powered external drives can cause this issue. Also, you may have some corrupted data on the drive. I would suggest moving what games you can to
the internal drive and then reformatting your external drive, and then move it back. If none of that works you may want to look into getting a self powered external hard drive, or replacing the enclosure with one that has it's own power source. This is what
I had to do and have run into no problems since. Let me know if this helps, if it doesn't we can try to find another way to troubleshoot the issue.

Usually 2TB or less drives are usb powered, upwards of this size usually come with an additonal power supply that has to be used.

(2TB or less drives are usually 2.5 inch and the larger ones are 3.5 inch and need additional power to run)

External Hard Drives for the Xbox One

I would just buy a USB 3.0 enclosure that will fit the 3.5” hard drive.

I doubt the 2.5” enclosure you mentioned will be able to power a 3.5” hard drive, as those require external power sources.
