External Hard Drive not working after update.

My fiance's Seagates 3TB hard drive stopped working with his Xbox One after the summer update. The hard drive itself is fine since it is working with other Xbox Ones and his PC. We have tested all the ports on the console and they are able to charge controllers
and read a small usb thumb drive. We even went and bought a new wire for the hard drive, just to make sure and that made no difference. The weird thing is, when you go into the settings, then storage the hard drive is listed there but when you press A on it,
nothing happens. No option to make it your main hard drive. But when you go into my game and apps, the external hard drive is not present, just the internal drive. We have tired all the normal troubleshooting. Power cycled the console, clear the cache, unplugged
the Xbox and let it cool off for a bit. Reformated the hard drive and factory resetted the console and still nothing. At this point, we have no idea what else to do and we are starting to get very annoyed.

    :)

well after updating my xbox my external hard drive keeps telling me its ready every 5 secs its seems to not like the update after restarting xbox a few times with out hard drive plugged in the plugging it back in seems to do the trick so far .it kept hanging
every time if would say external storage is ready if was fine before update .

so far it seems to be working but they might want people to know to unplug external storage before running the new update

    Hello, Lymiss!

I too had the same problem until I did this solution.

Follow these instructions for more detail.

It’s possible that there were recent updates to Xbox One and that you need to manually update your system for it to detect your external storage. Here’s how:

Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select All settings.

    Select System.

Look under Console info & updates. If it says Update available, there’s an update you need to install.

After you’re done installing the update, go back to Settings and select System, and then Storage. See if your device appears in the list.

If this doesn’t resolve the problem, or if there were no recent updates to Xbox One, try the next solution

Check to see if you’re in Instant-On power mode. For more information, see How to change the power settings on your Xbox One console.

If you’re currently in Instant-On mode, follow these steps to adjust the power management for storage:

Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select All settings.

    Select Power.

    Go to Power mode.

Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage.”

If this solution doesn’t resolve the issue, try the solutions in the following section.

Here are some other things to try if your Xbox One still isn’t detecting your external storage device.

Remove and then reconnect the drive.

Connect the drive to a different USB port on the console.

Perform a “full reboot” of the console:

Press the power button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds.

Turn on the console again, and then see if it detects the external drive.

If you keep experiencing the problem, contact Xbox Support.

If it keeps happening please do contact support. It would be the best interest if you did. The update has had many fails with people.

    Hey there Lymiss

I'll do my best to assist you at the moment and provide steps to Troubleshoot the issue.

As you mentioned in your first post it does in fact work with a other console + P.C so the drive isn't damaged. Was it plugged in when updating the console it's best to remove any external drives wires etc when provided with an update.

Is your other console up too date? If not lets update it and test it there.

It may be the update as well causing this as you mentioned it worked before to the update in this case you may need to report this.

Lets remove the drive 'Clear MAC address' (Settings - network - advanced settings - alternate MAC address - clear - restart) boot up the console wait up to 5 minutes then plug in the drive. Let me know if that fixed it or not thanks.

External Hard Drive not working after update.

Nothing works - it's an issue with the July update.

AFAIK - they are aware of the issue and are looking into it.

No point messing around with the drive/x1 until they release a patch.

Thanks PurpleNurple. We tried that and it is still the same result. Shows up in settings/storage but not in my games and apps. I have tried customer support but they have no idea and said I am the only one to report it as not working.

Are you currently in the preview program that may be the issue as well.

And i see similar issues like yours but not exactly like it so it seems rare for people to get this a forum staff member (Mister Mascot) has posted there is issues with external HDD's but yours isn't as like the other issues so it is hard to tell if your
issue is getting patched as well.

    forums.xbox.com/.../2193754.aspx

The threads above will show you Mister Mascot's post and the link he provided.

This console was not on the preview build or was the GT that controls it. I left the preview program right before 7 days to die came out due to the preview program breaking controllers and the devs not fixing them. It annoyed me that this hard drive issues
seems to have been know for awhile but nothing is being done. I really wish this update never came out.

I understand most of your games are on external but at the moment they are working to patch it.

If i were you hop back into the program and wait till the next update comes out then you will be part of the few to get it and have there external HDD fixed before its a public release.

Another thing you can do is try OSUDT that will re-install the update manually and hopefully fix your issue.

External Hard Drive not working after update.

I have the exact same problem. My external hard drive wont work after the august summer update. at first when i plugged it in. it asked if i wanted to use it for games and apps or as a usb storage device for movies, images and music. i choose the latter
ofc but then nothing happened. cant find the drive on settings when i go in the media player app it just says that it cant find any device. ive also tried all the troubleshooting guides with hard resetting the console, plugging in n out the drive. and YES.
the hard rive works just fine on my computer and DID work fine on my xbox one prior to this update.

I'm having the same issue, my external hard drive shows up when I go into setttings-system-storage, right next to the internal hard drive but when I go into games and apps I get nothing. Even when I click show contents it just goes into the games and apps
menu but just shows the internal hard drive and this all happened right after the new update. I've tried all the troubleshooting guides without any luck and now I'm just getting frustrated. Any help would be much appreciatted

I have the same issue... sort of... I have two external hard drives (the second with no content at this time,) both were running fine prior to the latest update. Now I can see my main external drive (with all of my games on it,) but only when I go to the
system settings. I used to be able to see all or any one of my drives with the drop-down menu and miss that feature since things automatically try to install onto the pitifully small internal drive (I used to be able to see these and move them,) but now the
option doesn't appear to be available.

My second external drive has simply disappeared.
