    External Hard Drive Not Recognized

I just bought a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB external hard drive for my Xbox One. I'm repeatedly getting the error message when i connect the hard drive to my xbox one that the hard drive must be USB 3.0 and 256GB or higher to be recognized.

Details about the external hard drive:

    - 5TBs in storage

    - USB 3.0, backwards compatible to 2.0

    - Here's the product itself: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate...69&st=categoryid$pcmcat186100050005&cp=1&lp=2

    What I've tried:

    - attached to all USB ports on Xbox one, same error message

    - held power button down for 10 seconds to fully shut off xbox one console, same error message

    - connected hard drive to Windows 8.1 laptop to make sure it could be read, connected to computer fine

Any ideas what could be causing the issue or what I'm missing?

    :)

Xbox One External HDD Revert Back HELP!

Done it! No thanks to anyone on the forums! Extremely unhelpful!

If anyone else is have the same problem here is a link to reformatting external hard drives. Likely your hard drive will show as unrecognized so just follow that section. Pretty simple in the end.

    External Hard Drive Not Recognized

Well if anyone else runs into this, I was able to solve it by using a different USB 3.0 cable.

  5. You do not recieve an error massage right?

Have you tried formatting it on PC and than try again formatting at XB1?

I believe your HDD has some presetting and Software including some drivers for comunicate with MAC.

Make shure your HDD is complete empty and not cutted in diffrent partitions.

Do you have the possibilty to try it with another USB 3.0 Cable?

Also try a Hard Reboot! again (unplug AC Power)

Hold Power Button on Console at least 5-6 seconds untill you hear a beep and Console turns off

◾Wait ~30sec. until the light on the Power Supply turns Orange.

◾Disconnect Power Supply from Wall Outlet and from XB1

    ◾Wait again ~40sec.

◾Plug Back in Power and try again.

  6. I think its the 2.0/3.0 thing that is causing your problems, your computer as no problem changing from 2.0 to 3.0 I don't know if your xbox would do the same, I hope the above works for you.

  7. Hey I just bought a seagate backup plus 3tb and it was only going to media and not storage for games it wouldn't even let me format it on Xbox one so I called xbox and they said it's not compatible with the xbox it has to be a seagate expansion not a backup
plus because it just backups files and doesn't let you put games and apps into the storage just media and pictures and music

  9. I also have a Seagate 5TB external USB 3.0 drive although not the exact same one as the OP. I had to use a different cable as well. Original cable is supposedly USB 3.0 but Seagate must be sourcing them from somewhere cheap because they must either barely
meet the USB standard or not meet it at all. Different cable = Problem solved.

I had the same issue with a USB3 ICY BOX external enclosure with a 2 TB drive. Xbox One did not acknowledge it being plugged in via any of the USB3 sockets, just nothing. It was originally a backup drive for a Synology DiskStation so thought maybe that
was causing issues. Plugged it into a Mac which said it was unusable so went into Disk Utility and the drive was there, selected it and formatted it as a FAT volume. This took about 3 seconds, plugged it back into the XBox One rear USB3 ports and voila ,
up popped the window asking if I wanted to use the drive and format it (again).

Works great and started moving all games to it.

I am still a little surprised the XBox One didn't acknowledge the drive at all when it was just a file system issue.

I just picked up a Seagate 3TB Expansion External HDD, after swapping between an older usb cable and the one that came with the neww HDD, the Xbox One saw it and I began formatting. Love that they (M$) didn't put s8me kind of unrealistic, capacity threshold
    for expansion drives.

if any of the steps dont work like buying a new cable or the hard reboot delete the partition on the hard drive and plug it back into the xbox for formatting worked for me with the seagate expansion 3tb !!!

Hi Jiza1981, you can generally buy cheap cables over eBay.

Kotaku did a great post some time ago regarding drives that will work seamlessly with the Xbox One. I've yet to get a hard drive for my Xbox One but I'm almost out of room (Microsoft just love giving me games! External Hard Drive Not Recognized :) ) so it's time to get one I think!

    Anyway, without linking anyone to anything external to this website, Kotaku recommended the following external hard drives;

1TB HGST Touro S 7200rpm Portable External Hard Drive

WD My Passport 1TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 Black

WD My Book 4 TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Backup

I've never used that Touro brand so I can't comment on them but I've had good experiences with Western Digital and their external hard drive range. Nice and sturdy units!

Hope that helps External Hard Drive Not Recognized :)
