    External Hard drive not recognised

Seems a few have had this problem. Well after a week of trying everything from restart to reset I had almost given up. I then found a 3 year post where a guy had the same issue, suddenly his external hard drive stopped being recognised. I tried his final
attempt and sure enough it worked for me too. I had to connect my external hard drive to a PC and delete the volume completely, it wouldnt finish formatting but that wasnt an issue as Xbox One needs to format it its self anyway. I lost all my games but obviously
it was easy enough to re download. The interesting bit was when I first connected the drive to my PC it asked to initialise before it could continue. I s this because it had previously been used on my Xbox or had it been corrupted by some action by myself
or microsoft while attached to my Xbox? My concern is it happening again as it is time consuming re installing my complete game library. If anyone can shed any light on this I would be grateful.

    :)

  2. External hard drive recognised but not

I recently bought a hard drive and loaded it up with TV shows and movies so I could plug it into my xbox one and watch them but when I connect the device it pops up ready to use but when I go in the media player app there's no devices listed. If I go into
settings and storage the device is there so it is recognised but not in media player. Is there a way I can fix this? I've already tried formatting the drive but it didn't fix it.

You say "it wouldn't finish formatting". Is that because you cancelled the formatting, or because the computer encountered a problem with the drive and stopped formatting it?

Maybe the drive is starting to get corrupted sectors, and with a corrupted filesystem, the console might be unable to recognize the drive properly.

Try to format the drive on your PC completely again.

And it's normal for the PC to ask you to format it, as the console uses it's own proprietary file system that your PC can't "understand".

  5. Hi,

I believe the drive stops functioning on the console because the MBR (Master Boot Record) or what is also known as the Primary Partition Table becomes corrupt in some fashion. This does not mean the entire hard drive is damaged,
or indeed, that it is on the way out.

Even a failing drive would still be detected on the console, unless the partition sector - which is located at sector 1 - was damaged.

A failing drive will typically manifest itself on the console as hard drive read errors. The console will normally display error messages when this occurs, sometimes however it will simply crash and drop back to the dashboard.

A well known sign of a failing drive is a very audible 'clicking' sound - the hard drive 'click of death'. The clicking is caused by the hard disk read-write actuator resetting to its home position after failing to read a hard disk sector. This clicking
obviously does not occur on SSD drives, since they contain no moving parts.

My external hard drive failed to be detected a couple of years ago, so I had to reformat it. It seems to be okay now though.

Xbox One will not let me play my disc games, only digital.

It recognises the external hard drive and all my games are on there and when I unplug the hard drive and put a disc in. It still doesn't do anything.
