    External hard drive not reading games


    I've used the same 1tb external drive on my xbox for awhile now but as I was playing cod black ops it crashed and restarted. it wasn't recognizing the drive so I unplugged and plugged it back in, now
    it's asking me to reformat the drive. That wouldn't be a problem if I didn't already have a full drive worth of games downloaded on it and now it's stuck as a media drive. Any ideas?

    The small print at the bottom of the page that I linked for you mentions:

    "USB flash drive is not a hard drive."

    Xbox's connection with an external drive is read-only. You can only read files that are already on the drive after connecting. You can't save game files or anything else on the Xbox main drive onto an external hard drive.

    Thanks for coming to the forums. Sorry for the issue with your external hard drive. With external hard drives this can happen. In this case yes you will lose all the installed games. Unfortunately, there is no way around this as it sounds like the external
    HD is corrupt. In order to use for games you will need to reformat. You can try the troubleshooting steps for a

    external HD to being detected    .

    I have same question. If connect in my XBOX it say that I need reformat. But if i conect the same in my pc I can open it and see a few of carpet with something. Then... have a format, my PC readit but my Xbox do not.

    Hi,

    Simple answer, your hard drive is failing. Fix? Buy a new hard drive or use an external hard drive. The Xbox 360 supports external hard drives up to 2 TB.

    Hard drives die and before they do, they generally exhibit, disk read errors, corrupted files none working games. Hard disk drives are mechanical with moving parts, its it not if they fail its a matter of when.
