  1. External Hard Drive Not Detected

I bought my Toshiba Canvio 1 TB external hard drive in November of last year. It has worked flawlessly for about 7 months. About 3 days ago, my external hard drive stopped being detected. I have tried every method of fixing it on the troubleshooting page
with no success. When I turn on the console, the hard drive turns on and stays on for about 10 minutes then the light turns off. How do I fix this?

    :)

External hard drive not formatting on Xbox One

    Hi

When I added an external hard drive to my console the drive format was pretty quick.

If you have run through all of the steps listed below reference the external hard drive nor being detected and it is still not being detected then I would try to obtain a replacement external hard drive and hopefully this one should work correctly.

  3. External Hard Drive not detected

I have a 2TB Seagate External HDD that has worked up until now. Usually if I move my console I have to power cycle a few times for it to be detected, but then it works fine until I move the again. I move it again today and got ready to do the resets for
the HDD and it did not work. I already tried all of the support page stuff about power cycling, moving USB ports, yadda yadda, and none of it has worked. Support told me to reset the console pretty much and that is worst case for me. I know many others have
issues like this, but I have not seen a tread with an actual fix yet.

UPDATE: I just tried plugging the external hard drive into my brother's Xbox One, it also wasn't detected. However, we are both Preview members. Would that have anything to do with it?

    Hi l The Thunder l

Sorry your hard drive isn't recognizing. It for sure could be an update that caused this to stop working. Do you by chance have a friend or family member with an Xbox that is not in the preview program? If you could test there It would definitely help a
lot to know that info. Also, are you sure the drive is still good? If you're not worried about reinstalling the games onto that drive, I would recommend plugging it into a Windows machine, formatting it NTFS, and then seeing if works in that machine by copying
a media file to it, and then playing it. As you've done all the other troubleshooting steps, knowing if the drive is good or not will for sure help, where we go from there External Hard Drive Not Detected :).

  6. Okay. I will try to plug it into a friend's Xbox and see if it works. However, if I reformat it, will I lose all of my saved game data too? I don't mind reinstalling the games but I had a lot of saves on there too.

Game saves are located in the cloud. As long as you're connected to the Internet with your Xbox you should be fine.

    Hi MaV 40,

Sorry you're having issues with a USB stick not recognizing. Can you please create your own thread as this issue is a bit different than yours, and let me know some more information. What are you trying to use with the stick? Is it Media files, if so how
is it formatted, Did you create it using a Mac or a PC? Generally media sticks should be FAT32 or NTFS playing media files. Mac and Linux have another type,. which would not work here. If you're using this to install games, make sure its USB 3.0, and at least
    256GB.

Again, please let us know in a new thread so we can support your exact issues. External Hard Drive Not Detected :D

Ive been having the same exact issue with my external hard drive. i also am a member of the preview program. this all happened to me right about the same time you originally posted or just after. if my external is plugged in when the xbox boots up... i just
gets stuck on the loading screen. i have to remove the hard drive before start up to get it to boot. either way, im unable to use the hard drive now. ive tried all the suggested stuff online. the hard restart, using a different usb port, changing my power
settings and nothing has worked. i do know that the hard drive is still good though because my laptop recognizes it without any problems. ive tried contacting microsoft about it and STILL have not got any response from them. how many more people has this happened
    too???

    Hi REAPER951,

Sorry you're having issues with your drive. As you're a member of the preview program, please post your question here. Makes sure to list any and add troubleshooting steps taken.

PS. This thread was pretty old, and the OP likely found their answer already. So the community can better assist you, please try to always create new threads for yourself rather than bumping an old thread.

    External hard drive malfunction

Is your console an Xbox 360 or Xbox One ?

Double check if the external hard drive is actually being detected, sometimes the USB connection might be loose. If the external hard drive is not detected, turn off the console

and then double check the USB connector is firmly plugged in, then turn console back on and see if external hard drive appears.

Also another thing to check... some brands of external hard drive have a power light when turned on. Check if the power light is on.

xbox one not recognising my hard drive

    Hi there agentdutywars17,

Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with the Xbox console detecting the external hard drive. I recommend to try the following:

    • Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One
    • Try a different port on the Xbox console
    • Try using another cable that connects from your external hard drive to your Xbox console
    • Try a different external hard drive to help isolate the issue between the Xbox or the hard drive

Give this a try and let us know the results.

    Hello Edward,

Thanks for the replies. We recommend trying to format the external hard drive on a PC. Make sure to format to NTFS. Also here is a guide for issues

    detecting external hard drive
. If the hard drive is not compatible with the console it will read it as a media device no matter the format.

    Thanks,
