    External Hard drive not connecting

I have a western Digital 3.5TB external hard drive which was initially hooked up to my xbox one several months ago, I used it as my primary hard drive initially and it worked completely fine. I had not been paying attention to which hard drive was in used
until about three days ago when the Division downloaded, I noticed that all of my games had been removed and were in my queue "ready for install." As I tried to search for my external hard drive I noticed I couldn't find it although it was powered on and
hooked up through the 3.0USB side port. I unplugged the hard drive and reconnected, no luck. I did a hard reset on my xbox and powered off the hard drive and turned back on, no luck. I went into the instant-on settings and unchecked the turn storage off
option, still no luck. I have the most recent update on my xbox one. Any idea what is next to try in order to resolve this?

    :)

    Using a portable HDD

The small print at the bottom of the page that I linked for you mentions:

"USB flash drive is not a hard drive."

Xbox's connection with an external drive is read-only. You can only read files that are already on the drive after connecting. You can't save game files or anything else on the Xbox main drive onto an external hard drive.

    Network no longer works

Here is a relevant note from the known issues summary, I hope you find it useful

    Wireless Networking:

You may encounter a “wireless network hardware on this console is not working” error when connecting to Xbox Live with a wireless connection.

Your Xbox One console may be unable to detect a wireless connection while an external hard drive is plugged in. Workaround: Unplug the external hard drive, hard reset the console, connect to WiFi, then connect the external hard driv

Hey there External Hard drive not connecting :)

What is the drive's model? I would test if it works on a PC and see if the drive gets recognized in BIOS, Device Manager and Disk Management. Here's how to get to the last two:

    Device Manager:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

    Disk Management:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

If the drive is recognized I would suggest that you download and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes all tests. Here's a link to that too:
products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx This should give you an answer to whether the drive is causing the problems or not.

Post back with some results from this,

Yes I can try that next when I first got it I put it on my pc to initially set it up then move it to the Xbox after everything was running fine. I have the diagnostic tool installed already but I can hook it back up and make sure everything is fine. Will
I have to re format to pc and lose all my downloaded games?

Ok great I will let you know the result later today.

Ps if I'm running all my games off it versus the internal hard drive will there be latency issues or slow load times. I'll post the model number later today but I know it's speed is 5400 which I thought was the same as the internal of the day one Xbox ones

I have it hooked up to my laptop, my laptop makes a pinging noise when I connect the USB port, but when I am looking in my computer, the WD My book is not showing up. When I open the device manager it shows the WD Device and that it is working properly,
however, when I look in Disk manager it is not appearing.

    Here is the model

lastly, I have three WD programs installed on my PC from the first use with this. It is the WD Smartware, WD Security, and WD Utilities. WD Security does not recognize that the My Book is connected, WD utilities does, but when I check status it says Smart
Status Failed, and when I choose to erase disk it says too many bad passwords. in the WD smartware tool, it shows the My book but doesn't allow me to open My book or view the properties. Since I can see any options anywhere to re-format this I'm not sure
what else there is to do besides erase the disk.

I'm trying again... I went to the western digital settings and chose to erase the drive, then I get an error that says WD external drive format failed....... There is no hard reset button on this thing, I'm not really sure what went wrong here or why this
thing stopped working but it is completely f*ed at this point

  14. Sounds as the drive is bad, or the connection to the drive to the usb connector. If I'm correct, the wiring to the usb plug and the hard drive has to go through a circuit board first to enable the hard drive to be read and written to.

It really shouldn't be bad, it's brand new and was never really used. I read another thread on here that the instant-on of the xbox keeps the external hard drive spinning on and off. Which I have had my xbox on instant-on, but I don't know I can't do anything
with it right now, there isn't even a reset button on the back to do a hard reset
