external hard drive no longer recognized

i have been using a samsung/seagate 1tb external hard drive with no problems for the last few months,however it now no longer shows up on my dashboard.All the games that are on it show up in the 'ready to install' section but i can launch them from the game
hub and they play fine.

i have gone through all the steps in the support page with no luck it just isnt registering on this xbox,however on my sons xbox one it shows up ready to use,please will someone help before i go mad

Yeah, it is a huge possibility that you are experiencing the same bug that many people are experiencing. Some of the Xbox's updates are making the hard drives unreadable for some reason, even the the hard drives may work on other computers or Xbox's. Sorry
to say but as of right there is no fixed, we had several topics on here since August but it looks that Xbox may of deleted them when changing over to the new format for the forums. You can try reformatting the Xbox but I don't know if that will help.

It's possible the caddy itself is faulty and the HDD is fine, but to test that you would have to extract the HDD from the caddy and buy a replacement one (they are very cheap) however if it is a commercial external HDD their caddies are sometimes difficult
to dismantle and on occasion use custom connectors instead of the standard SATA interface on the HDD which would rule out a replacement unless you can buy a spare caddy of the same type/brand on eBay or something.

Any clicking or odd noises from the HDD means it's dead/faulty.

Please go to the guide menu highlight setting and use the option to restart the console. If you do this without the external hard drive connected after the console restarts hopefully when you next connect the external drive it should work.

 

This has worked for others:

Disconnect your External HDD. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console (DO NOT connect
your External HDD). Once it is back up and operational test for results. Now connect the HDD and see if it again recognized.

Unfortunately I see other people on the forum are also having external hard drive detection issues since the latest updates, surely Microsoft must be aware of these things? Hopefully someone will come forward with a solution because I've exhausted all the
options given to me
