external hard drive no longer recognized after update

I have the same problem. I was in the middle of playing madden 16 (which is installed on my external drive) and the game just quit. I didnt think anything of it so i just turned off my xbox because i had other things to do. but when i tried to play today,
the external drive wasnt recognized. the blue light on top wasnt lighting up. I have a seagate 3tb expansion drive. i went and got a new usb cable and that didnt work either.

 

Both devices were freshly formatted.

 

I am too getting this issue and am unwilling to resort to reformatting. Sure saves are backed up to the cloud and purchases can be re-downloaded, but suggesting someone do that is completely irresponsible as a software company.

My drive was showing up just fine until I unplugged the system for transport. Everything on the drive still works and shows up as an option but the "Manage Game" screen is blank for the games on the external drive. Changing install destination options to
internal and back does show the drive as unformatted even though the games on it work just fine. I have reported the issue multiple times over the past 6 months since starting to use external drives but all the previous times were fixed by power cycling the
drive or system but not this time as the system continues to disregard it's existence as a write or full control destination.

Im in the preview program and ever since the last update a few days ago for the new dashboard, one of my 2 externals quit working on me. Its a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra which has always worked great until this ultra buggy new dashboard update. Now I think
I may have lost a ton of data on it that will take me months to recover thanks to these these wonderful things called bandwidth caps. I know this is beta and all, but there is no way MS should have released something this buggy onto the public. Yes I tried
all the steps. I tried unplugging my system, I tried power cycling. As usual its detected by my PC, but only when under Disk Management. That is normal though. I could reformat it under Disk Management if given the option. However im holding out to see if
it gets recognized when I revert my console back out of this horrible buggy beta.

 

One way some people have got there hard drive to work is to do a full power cycle but before restarting unplugging the hard drive from the usb port then plugging it back in when the system is fully started.

 

Hey there Sarjent,

I would check the drive's health just to be on the safe side. The manufacturer should provide a tool on their website which you can use to see if the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status is fine and if it has any bad sectors on it.

Also, did you try other drives on that console and did you try that particular drive on another console or a PC to see if it works at all?

Have you tried using a different hard drive with your Xbox One console? no i dont have another usb 3 drive

Is your hard drive detected when you plug it into your PC? yes

When did this issue start to occur? straight after ( Console OS Version is 6.2.13332.0 (xb_rel_1508.150903-2141) fre ) was loaded.

Have you already tried reformatting your hard drive? no i dont want to lose data that isn't in the cloud

Are you participating in the Preview Program? not that i'm aware of.

 

Has anyone ever come up with a solution? I'm having a similar issue where the hard drive will not show up at all however it'll show up on a computer just fine, the HDD worked fine before the latest update and now it doesn't work at all, have tried all the
troubleshooting but nothing works
