External Hard Drive Issues

I've been using a WD MyBook 4TB hard drive with my Xbox One for almost a year now. Just today I thought my xbox was broke because it was stuck on the green loading screen. I starting unplugging cables to see what caused the problem and as soon as I unplugged
the HDD, the xbox would load properly. As soon as I plug the HDD back in, the xbox goes black(Actually, it's the default picture from my AV Receiver on the screen that shows up, but for arguments sake the screen is black.) . Then I unplug it, the xbox will
reboot and come to it's main menu without a problem....

...so something isn't working with my HDD. Whether it's the hard drive itself or the Xbox I don't know. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

If you have an external hard drive could you try deleting a game and installing it directly to the console's hard drive to rule out issues with the external drive itself?

 

Disconnect the hard drive and perform a power cycle (support.xbox.com/.../power-cycle-console) with the console. Then reconnect the hard drive and see if it begins behaving.

If that's not working, you may wish to try a factory reset on the console with the external drive disconnected. This will delete the contents of the internal drive and you will need to redownload them, but it's probably less content than would need to be
redownloaded onto the external hence why I suggest this first. Game saves on the internal will be deleted, but they are backed up to the cloud if you play while connected to Xbox Live, so they will be resynced to your internal drive next time you play each
game.

If even that is not working, can you reformat the hard drive either with the console or a PC? This will delete all its contents and you will need to redownload games.
