External Hard Drive issues...

Hello. I have a Western Digital My Book 3TB 3.0 usb. When I first set it up it was running flawlessly. Recently I had this problem when my Xbox wouldn't even recognize it and it was just sitting in my storage serving no purpose. I eventually called up WD
about my problem and they took me step by step to format & partition my hard drive on my PC.

It fixed the problem and was working as it should. That same day it was acting up as before and i couldn't install/move games onto it. The only options I remember it gave me was "View contents/Format/make this primary..". When I clicked format, it erased
everything on it (while still being unusable). So I remember what the WD tech guy said & I did the step by step on my PC again.

Now it says my external hard drive is now limited to pictures, music & videos...help me.

And YES I've tried different usb 3.0 cables/hard reset console /unplugged everything

If you have an external hard drive could you try deleting a game and installing it directly to the console's hard drive to rule out issues with the external drive itself?

I would take the drive to a PC and run a diagnostic tool to see if the drive is functioning properly. I recommend using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. Run both the quick and the extended tests and see if the drive passes both. Here's a link:

If the drive passes the tests, it should be healthy and safe to store your data.

I would also try another drive on the console and see if it functions properly.

Post back with the test results.

Hey mate,

Not sure about paritioning and all that, it should be needed from what I know. SHould be able to plug it in, format it from the xbox one, and thats it.

@DENA That was my first attempt and non of those suggestions helped.

@Captain I'm currently running the extended test, it passed the quick test.

 

OP - are you in the Preview Program? If so, a number of us in the Program are experiencing the problem where the console does not recognize the external hard drive at all.

 

@Joe yes I am. I remember reading a couple of threads from various forums about preview members having problems, but I assumed it has been resolved by now.

 

@Marcus - nope, hasn't been solved or even addressed. All I have received was try different USB 3.0 cables, which doesn't solve the problem. I have a Day One console. You? I am wondering if that could be that issue (an early manufactured console), since
the problem is sporadic amongst the Preview members.

 

@Joe Wow that's unbelievable this need to be noted. Also, YES I have a Day One console. Owning the Xbox One since 2013 having a hard drive is mandatory at this point.

Thanks for trying that Eliminates some of the common causes, and will assist in a support agent helping you if we're not able to.

So when you plug it in now, what options are you given? are you able to still format it from the xbox, and if so have you done that? Just trying to understand where exactly you are at with the issue, so either myself or a support agent can assist .

It could also be a issue thats stemming from the preview program, however it seems to have been happening for a while, so am not so sure that is the cause.

How did the extended test go? If it passes that too with no issues the drive should be healthy and performing properly. You can also post the S.M.A.R.T. status here if you need us to help you out with this.

I am also a Preview member on a Day One console and today when I turned on my console it is not recognizing my external hard drive. I have a Toshiba Canvio Basics drive

 

@Captain it has also passed. When I goto disk management it says my external is healthy. Yet it still have the same problem.
