  1. External Hard Drive Issues Addressed

I am posting this in response to numerous posts about external hard drive issues on the XBox One. As I have stated elsewhere here and on Twitter, I cannot recommend a specific BRAND of hard drive but I do have suggestions concerning type and usage of them.

I am using a 1TB desktop internal hard drive in an external enclosure on my XBox One console. There have been all kinds of issues with it concerning installing and managing game data. I have come to the conclusion that the XBox One OS is set up to expect a
portable non-powered external drive. Unless Microsoft decides to update the system to properly handle a powered drive, I suggest not using one. If you must use one, you should power the drive on and off manually and turn it on AFTER you turn on the system.
Also, you should uncheck the system setting that turns off the power to the drive on shutdown. Hope this information helps.

I'm not an expert or system engineer. This is just my experience with this issue. You can also see my conversation with Support on Twitter

If you have an external hard drive could you try deleting a game and installing it directly to the console's hard drive to rule out issues with the external drive itself?

    External Hard Drive Issues Addressed

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with this. Although the issue that you're experiencing may be due to the fact you're using a hard drive that is meant as an internal drive (whether it is used in an enclosure or not is moot) instead of an external
    hard drive.

I feel that a drive that is internal would be meant to function differently than an external drive and that may be where your issues are originating.

Would it be possible to try an external drive, either powered by the console or by and external power source (plug) to see if there's any improvement?

I'm only asking as I have an external hard drive (WD seems to be the best from what I've heard) and have had no issues with it.

  5. It is possible that you could be correct in your assumption about how the internal drive functions. However, I would imagine that the interface of the enclosure would make the functions of an internal drive a moot point other than the fact that the drive
itself would not recognize commands sent to it through the enclosure interface (sorry to be so technical for those who are not able to follow). In other words, the enclosure would function like an emulator and anyone who has used an emulator knows that they
    are not perfect.

At any rate, I plan to buy the Forza 10th Anniversary XBox One and will connect a 2.5 inch portable drive to it for storage without an external power supply. This will allow the system to turn on and shut off the drive as needed.

Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping that I'm wrong in regards to the internal drive. You'll have to let me know how things go with the other console and portable drive.

In the meantime, is it possible to format the internal one you have on your PC with the FAT system to see if that improves the quality any? I know it will be a bit of a hardship because you'll need to redownload the content (unless you already have another
portable drive you can move it on to for now).

    Good luck.

    Tv configuration App Not working

Having the same issues. Could be something to do with the external hard drive maybe, not had time to troubleshoot yet though.

    Some ideas to try maybe?

    1. Make the Xbox One drive the primary drive, while the external drive is still plugged in

    2. Try with the external hard drive unplugged

No idea if this will make a difference, but this issue only started for me since I got an external drive. Unless others are having the same issue with no external hard drive?

May I know if an external hard drive is plugged into your console? If yes, have you kept the external hard drive unplugged when performing troubleshooting steps and check if the issue persists without external hard drive?
