External hard drive is NTFS but Xbox pc wont recognise it...

Hi,

so im trying to re-install Halo master chief collection after uninstalling it from my C drive as i needed space to install Helldivers from steam.. now i cant seem to get my Xbox app on pc to recognise my D drive (which is a 1 TB external hard drive), this hard drive has over 600gb free on it. But for some reason it is saying in the settings when i go to change the location of installation that the hard drive is not recogised as a NTFS device, yet when i look at the format of the drive it is.. please can someone help?

:)

External hard drive recognising but not formatting

Hi, presume this is for an xbox one (rather than a 360), the external drive would need to be formatted to NTFS rather than FAT.

Try reformatting it to NTFS on the PC, that may help with it getting recognised

question about saving the game
i have a 250 gb external hard drive i bought for our pc but never used it, can i use that on the xbox to save games to?
Yes but only if the external hard drive is formatted to FAT32.

If it is formatted to NTFS then it wont work

one of them pre built external drive wont work, all NTFS, just a cheap $20 adapter box.

managing harddrive space?

You could also buy a external hard drive. Only thing is alot of people say they dont work. With is partly true because they are set to NTFS. all you need to do is connect it to your PC, go to My Computer, right click on the external HDD and re-format it
to FAT32. Only thing is that it wont be complatable with your PC afterwards.

External Hard drive problem

What type of external drive is it? seagate western digital etc hdd or a sdd. Have you tried power cycling your xbox. Then while its off plug it in the usb port then start her up and see what happens if the drive is ok this should work. Otherwise it could
be simple as the 3.0 cord is messed up possibly. That is if the hard drive is not corrupted or somehow damaged. Which xbox do you have?

Ntfs is a Windows technology, and the XBOX Operating System is based on the Windows technology.

For multimedia, the disk stays NTFS. If you format it for games, the format isn't NTFS so you can't read the game files on pc.

You will need to reformat on your computer to use it on the computer, when you have done that you cannot use it on your xbox one until you format it again with your console,

When you attach an external hard drive to the Xbox One and choose to format it for use with the console, the system changes the formatting of the drive to the one that the console uses. Once this is done, your PC will
not recognise the drive for data storage, but it should know that it is attached.

To enable you to use the drive again on your PC, it must be re-configured. To do this you need to load the 'Disk Management' tool

If your hard drive is in working order, it will be detected in Disk Management and you will be prompted to 'Initialise the device'. This will then make the drive available in Windows, but it will be formatted again only
Windows use.

At present it isn't possible to use an external hard drive for Xbox One and PC use, it has to be one or the other.

Heres a little help from windows report https://windowsreport.com/xbox-one-external-hard-drive/
