    External hard drive help

I just bought an external drive and my Xbox sees it as a media drive. The option to format is not available in settings. Is there anyway I can make this stupid Xbox format or use the drive for games? I don't have a PC to format it at this time.

    Thanks

    :)

You're still going to end up formatting it on the Xbox anyway....

    External hard drive help

When you connect a compatible external storage drive, Xbox One will prompt you to format the drive and walk you through setting it up to store games and apps.

The basic requirements for storing games and apps on an external drive are:

Has capacity of 256 GB or more and

    Uses USB 3.0.

Devices that don’t meet these requirements will be treated as media storage, such as for music or video. If you have a storage device that does meet these requirements for game and app storage, you can cancel the format to use it as a media device.

If your console doesn’t recognise your external drive, see Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One.

If you cancel the format when you connect the storage device, you can still set it up as a storage device later. Here's how:

Scroll left from the Home screen to open the guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select All Settings.

Select System, and then select Storage.

Select your storage device, and then select Format for games & apps.

  5. The external hard drive that you purchased, did it have the USB 3.0 cable? If it did not, and is not at least USB 2.0/3.0 compatible, it will not be able to perform as storage for games. The USB 2.0 plug allows too slow a connection to allow access for playing
    games.

Let me know if this helps. 'Like' this response if it helps, as this helps me with my Ambassador rating.

To add on to M3tal Daz3's post it's been known to connect it to the 360 running FAT32 and format it there once done the Xbox one will provide the format option for the drive to run NTFS.

I don't have an Xbox 360 to format this drive. The drive itself is connected via USB 3.0 cable. The option to format the drive does not exist when I select it in the storage tab in system settings. The only option is "view content." the drive is a Seagate
    2TB slim brand new.

Hi there External hard drive help :)

To add on top of what the guys suggested, you could fill the drive with zeros and thus completely wipe whatever is on the drive (if you don't need the data) and then retry the regular operation on the console. Trying with another cable is also a good thing
to do. Do make sure to check the drive's health with a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer to verify that the drive is in good health.

After that try formatting the drive on a PC and see if the console will recognize it then.

There's an ongoing issue with external HDD's after the last update.

Supposedly it's being worked on, but we've had no updates in days. Coincidentally, most people are reporting issues with Seagate external drives....

Thr problem fixed itself. I turned the Xbox off completely then on a few hours later and it worked. I was able to format and have installed several games in it. Shrug.

Are you using the internal drive or an external hard drive? If you are using an external drive try moving the game to the internal drive to see if that helps.

    External Hard Drive Help!!

    Hi there,

I would advise getting a different external drive like a usb flash drive that meets requirements and use that as storage.

The problem you are experiencing could be caused by the hard drive just bearly meeting the required specifications, that's likely why it is getting hot.

Be aware that you will need a usb flash drive with atleast 16Gb to be used with GTA V

For disc based games all you will need to do is put the disc back into the console and it will re install the game and if online the console will also download the game updates as well. As for games purchased through the online store if you go to My Games
& Apps on the console on the left there should be a ready to install section where you can re download these games from.

As for game saves as long as the console is kept online these should be stored on the Microsoft servers and will be downloaded again when required
