External Hard Drive for Xbox One only coming up as media player

    Hi

I bought an 2TB external hard drive to store some of my Xbox One games on.

I specifically bought a 3.0 USB drive as I knew this was a requirement, however when I load up my Xbox with it plugged in the option to format doesn't pop up.

Instead it just allows me to store media files only on there.

I previously asked the question and got given the following advice:

"If you connect this drive to your PC, does it show there? If it does, I suggest running Disk Management which a program built into Windows 10. You can get to it by right clicking on the Windows 10 Start button and selecting Disk Management from the list.

When the Disk Management is loaded you should see your drive in the list. Right click on the drive and select Format. Leave all the drop downs at their default values, but insure NTFS is selected, and insure there is a tick in the Quick Format box.

Click Ok and in a few seconds Windows will format the drive again. Once this is done, reattach the drive to your console. Now see if you can format it for Xbox Storage."

However I have tried this and still have the same issue. I have attached a picture of the hard drive showing up on my laptop and a picture of it showing up on my xbox as a media player.

    Recording audio from the XBox

If you have a USB flash drive or external hard drive, you can copy the music to the drive, plug the drive into the Xbox One, and play it from there (using Xbox Media Player or another app).

As a side note, consider looking for an external USB disc drive if you still need to use discs on your computer for whatever reason. Most laptops and other computers are ditching disc readers nowadays, but you can pick up a USB disc
drive for around $30-40, last I checked.

How to connect external hard drive?

@Farscape247 I did that and the external hard drive shows, but when I select it only gives me the option to "view contents", when I select view contents it takes me to the media player, when the media player opens it says "no devices found".

USB drive, external drive didn't work with Xbox one.

You can already use USB Flash drives and hard drives on Xbox One to view videos, music and pictures. To view these files you first need to download the Media Player Preview App from the Xbox One Marketplace. Connect your device and load the app.

To use an external hard drive for Xbox One storage, the device itself must be at least 256GB and USB 3.0. Which means the external storage for Xbox One data must be a hard drive, USB Flash drives are not supported for Xbox One storage.

Copy files from Mac to Xbox One external HDD ?

    Hi there espr3ss0,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear about the issue with external hard drive. The Xbox One acts as a media player by reading the files off the External Hard Drive.
