External hard drive for x box one

A novice myself ( having a 12 yeaer old grandson really helps). We had an external hard drive on the old x box one x. Just connected it to the series x and loaded the game from disc, but selected the option to put it on the external drive. This allowed it to load fully with the updates. Then just went to the menu and selected the option to move the game to the the internal drive.

Once done it worked fine.

okay instant on mode is already off because that's your way to get it to work with external hard drive it's an energy mode right now. And I have to keep the x box on in order for it to download to that hard drive. So you're saying leave the instant on mode
off and keep it on energy mode, and try to download to the internal hard drive? if it works with the external hard drive then it should work with the internal hard drive doing it that way shouldn't it? Because it does work with the external hard drive with
it on energy mode

Your external hard drive will work perfectly with Xbox One X.

Depending on how you want to use it, the external HDD is formatted differently for Games and Apps or capturing clips and screenshots.

If you goto System>Settings>System>Storage you will see both choices you have and what is required.
