External Hard Drive Doesn't Spin Down with Xbox One in Standby

I am using a Seagate Backup Plus 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive that I had purchased from Costco as my external device. I have been using this drive for a couple of months on and off with my desktop PC. When it was connected there the drive would
spin down and spin up depending on the usage of the drive. Now that I am using it on the Xbox One for all my games and add on content the drive never spins down even when the Xbox is in standby mode.

Is this a bug of the Xbox or that of the Seagate drive?

    Thanks...

    :)

  2. External Hard Drive. Power Saving Mode

I have a quick question. I have a Seagate 2TB external drive for my XBOX one. I noticed that the drive doesn't have a power switch, but a power saving mode can be turned on using the Seagate software. Once the XBOX is turned off I would like to see
the external Seagate hard drive power down to save the life of the drive. The gaming system is used about 10 hours a week and to have the drive spinning all the time doesn't seem right. Wondering if the XBOX tells the drive to spin down after powering off. If
anyone could shed some light I would appreciate it. Thanks!

External drive keeps ticking on and off

Does your external hard drive have a usb port as we as an external power supply or does the Usb power the hard drive itself? Secondly, is it set to instant on or power saving? There have been reports of problems with externally powered drives not getting
or hearing the go to sleep signal or signal which puts it into standby when console shuts down and therefore stays on. Some will go into standby but not power on again after console is powered back on. What drive are you using?

Does the drive spin down if you set the console to 'Power Saving' in the power options? If your console is set to 'Instant on' your drive will likely not spin down.

Yes the drive powers down if I fully power down the Xbox. The external hard should follow the same rules as a PC as I tested today. If my surface, laptop, or desktop goes to "sleep" then the external hard drive spins down. Also I have power management
set to spin down the drives after 15 minutes of no use which also works across all my Window 8 computers (surface, laptop, and multiple desktops).

The Xbox is based on Windows Kernel and should follow the same power management capabilities. I did find that Seagate has a dashboard application that you can manually override the PC settings and save in the drive's controller. I have set the spin down
to 30 minutes which seem to have resolved the issue for me. But I still think this is a bug in Xbox since not all external drives have such a configurable option.

XBOX One external hard drive keeps spinning up and down every minute

Attempted to turn off the option to power down drive so that it would be always on, but even then it spins down and up again every minute. So it seems no matter what setting it's on, it will not

    1. keep drive powered on when in standby

    or

    2. keep drive powered off when in standby

So if it's doing a status check every 60 seconds, is it the drive that is spinning up on its own, or is it the XBOX OS that is spinning it up I wonder?

I have another drive which I have plugged in and tried this on, it is a Hitachi Touro 1tb (usb powered hdd) and it also spins up every 60 seconds. I plugged the hitachi into another XBOX one S and noticed it exhibited the identical behaviour... Spinning
up and down every 60 seconds.

So that's two drives on two Xbox One's. I'm very puzzled. Thoughts?

Toshiba External Hard Drive spinning up every 60 seconds

I am also having this issue, but with a Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB.

If I use instant on mode, when the console is off the hard drive turns on, spins up, turns off, spins down and this cycle repeats every 30 seconds or so endlessly. None of the settings related to external hard drives, such as the option to turn off external
storage when the console is turned off, make any difference.

If I use energy saving mode, when the console is turned off the light on my external goes off, but the drive doesn't actually spin down. It continues to spin indefinitely until I pull the USB cable out of the console, then it will spin down.

Before the latest update, if I used instant on mode the hard drive would only spin up periodically when the console was checking for updates, or if it was downloading something. At all other times it would be off and spun down. If I used energy saving mode,
when I turned the console off, the hard drive would fully turn off and spin down and stay that way until the next time I turned the console on. I believe that these are the expected behaviours.

I have tried factory resets, using a different USB port on the console, using a different USB cable, and fully formatting the external and starting over. Nothing works.

The external works fine when connected to my PC. Also, I downloaded Seagate's SeaTools application and ran the tests that it offers on my external and it passed them all, so it appears to be in good shape. Given that I only started having issues after the
dashboard update and that it works fine on my Windows 10 PC, it makes me believe that something related to the update has triggered this issue.
