    I know this subject has been beaten to death but heres the thing:

    I wanted to record gameplay longer than the standard 10 mins.

    Bought the external hard drive

    - wd my passport 4tb usb external hard drive (WDBPKJ0040BBL-WESN)

    set up the hard drive as per usual

    - format to NTFS, connect to console, follow prompts.

    So i want to use this for media, so i select "use for media" pop-up dissapears and NO hard drive ANYWHERE TO BE FOUND.

    I have attempted every walkthrough, workaround, and fix. If i factory reset the console i can get the prompts to return. If i select "use for games" works as intended.

    So what is it about the media option that the console and device no longer communicate??

    I have the same issue. does not detect any external hard drives. only device it seems to detect was the controller.

    Hi there agentdutywars17,

    Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with the Xbox console detecting the external hard drive. I recommend to try the following:

    • Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One
    • Try a different port on the Xbox console
    • Try using another cable that connects from your external hard drive to your Xbox console
    • Try a different external hard drive to help isolate the issue between the Xbox or the hard drive

    Give this a try and let us know the results.

    Hello Edward,

    Thanks for the replies. We recommend trying to format the external hard drive on a PC. Make sure to format to NTFS. Also here is a guide for issues

    detecting external hard drive    . If the hard drive is not compatible with the console it will read it as a media device no matter the format.

    Xbox not recognizing seagate external hard drive

    You can try, Hector. Check if the MacBook will be able to detect the external hard drive. This way we can validate if the issue is the Xbox or the hard drive itself.

    not detecting external hard drive    . Ultimately, the last troubleshooting is to reformat the drive. Who is the manufacturer of the external drive? Have you tried to reach out to them also?
