  1. External Hard Drive Connected - Xbox One Shuts Down

I have connected an external USB drive to my Xbox One. When I attempt to browse the drive, the Xbox completely shuts down. This only happens with I attempt to view the contents of the drive. I have connected this drive several times before, with no issues.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

    External Hard Drive Not Recognized

I just bought a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB external hard drive for my Xbox One. I'm repeatedly getting the error message when i connect the hard drive to my xbox one that the hard drive must be USB 3.0 and 256GB or higher to be recognized.

Details about the external hard drive:

    - 5TBs in storage

    - USB 3.0, backwards compatible to 2.0

    - Here's the product itself: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate...69&st=categoryid$pcmcat186100050005&cp=1&lp=2

    What I've tried:

    - attached to all USB ports on Xbox one, same error message

    - held power button down for 10 seconds to fully shut off xbox one console, same error message

    - connected hard drive to Windows 8.1 laptop to make sure it could be read, connected to computer fine

Any ideas what could be causing the issue or what I'm missing?

    Hi there!

Sorry to hear that your USB drive is causing your Xbox One to shut down—that's quite odd as we haven't really come across this issue before! Let's have you first

    power cycle
your Xbox One if you haven't already. Additionally, do you have another external USB drive to use for testing purposes?

Let us know so we can best help you out!

  5. Never seen this either and I tried it on 2 different Ones and the both did the same exact thing. I ran a chkdsk /R and found out that there was a corrupt file on the USB drive. External Hard Drive Connected - Xbox One Shuts Down :( Now that I let the chkdsk run, the Xbox doesn't see the drive at all. I may
have to copy off the videos, reformat the drive and copy all the videos back. Hopefully that does the trick.

    Thanks for the reply!

External hard drive not shutting down

Sorry that's what I probably meant for it to enter enter a sleep mode. That being said any idea why it changed? It was perfectly fine a week ago but today I had to unplug everything form my xbox not sure if that caused anything I plugged it into my laptop to check the toolkit for it and the setting for it to sleep with display was turnd on so really not sure whats going on.

External hard drive not shutting down

Well because it's not supposed to

You don't want a hdd to shut down you want it to wind down to sleep

A sudden shut off would send the head crashing against the platters which is a big no no also why consoles warn you about sudden shutdown and data loss

You can cause physical damage to the platters

External hdds are self.powered they dont rely on host devices this is a safety feature not to mention you are only talking about 5watt per hour

You need to run it for months before you see a cent on your hydro bill

Your microwave or freezer or tv runs more power idle in an hour then a full console in a month on idle

Fyi there is a reason for it

When you click min om your microwave or "on" on your tv they both turn on instantly

Because they maintain power to receive the signal

    If you want completely off

First power down your console and wait for the external hdd to spin down completely

    Then unplug the cord

External hdds don't idle down like computers do until the host ia off and because they are self powered they don't turn off just idle

If you really really want a drive that turns off on demand

You need to limit yourself to less rhen 500gigs as most drives require dc power

Anything under 500 usually uses USB 3 -5 war power

Is it safe to leave a seagate external hard drive plugged in all the time(Xbox One)?

In my case I have a 4tb usb 3.0 powered drive that lives on my Xbox one S. Never has an issue, been connected for over two years. I also have a 6tb with external power supply that's been connected for about 4 years to my Xbox One. Rarely ever needs to
be unplugged. Once or twice it's given me an error that a game I tried to play wasn't installed. I just shut down the Xbox and power down the external hard drive and power it up again then turn on Xbox. All works fine after that.
