External drive will not format

So plugged in my sony hd-pg5 usb 3.0 500gb hard drive here are its specs

Disk size2.5 inches

Capacity500 GB USB 3.0

Transfer Rate (Max)Max. 5Gbps (USB 3.0)

my xbox one recognizes the drive and goes through the HD set up menus but it fails to format and returns to the hd detected screen ,

it just gets caught in a loop of recognizing the drive.

ive tried formatting it on my laptop to both NTFS and EXFAT

but the same thing happens

any advice.

Which external hard drive to use with Xbox 360 ?

as per the other comments about the use of the external hard drive for the 360 I am in the update preview program which allows additional External hard drives to be used.I purchased the same Seagate 2tb external hard drive as per my xboxone but when I apply
the format on the xbox360 as per the instructions it replies with unable to format. Would like to know what external hard drives are compatible? I no the hard drive works as tried it on the xboxone after it would not format for the 360

Cannot format external drive

Drive will not format when I run through the Xbox prompts. I originally had games saved on it but after the Feb update, it would not detect my drive. Reformatted it on my PC - both NTFS and exFAT, and also tried formatting it in the console with no partition.
It will run through the prompts to format, give me a blue circle for about 10 secs, then nothing. I have to unplug and try again for it to even recognize the drive.

 

Could be the usb3 cable seen this before a new cable sorted it good luck

 

Just been reading up on this it doesn't seem to be compatible with win 8 I don't know if that would have problems with Xbox one

 

tried a different cable samething, also have a windows 8.1 laptop and it works fine

my xbox one might just not like formating a sony hard drive! ;(

 

I think you would be better off with a Seagate or western digital i am using a Seagate no problems at all

 

Hi I have the same problem and went though it with Microsoft on the phone doing a system reset where you hold the front on/off button down for ten seconds to clear the cache but it would still not format the drive. Microsoft guys are mystified why it will
not work so have taken my details of the drive (same as above) and have promised to come back to me but I also think it is because its a Sony made drive. A very good drive though and it works well with my windows 8.1 laptop and anything else I care to plug
it into no problems at all it just will not seem to work with Xbox One I even formatted it to fat32 on my laptop before trying it in the Xbox one but it will not format it

 

i have a WD my book 2T doing same thing. i plug it in to x1 and it will ask me to format. I click yes and tell it to format and i get a spinning wheel and does not do anything else. if i go to settings and then to storage i can see my external hard drive
but it says unformatted. if i try to format again it just freezes. i have tried to leave it alone on the spinning wheel for a while. came back 2 hours later and still just spinning. hope this can be fixed with another update.

 

Update: still no reply from Microsoft. This needs sorting out as you have not looked at all the different makes of hard drives before you let the update out

 

I am having this problem with the SAMSUNG M# External HDD drive 1tb.

No solution yet?

 

I think the X1 supports 500 gigs max.

I got a WD MyBook and I like it, but it doesn't shut down like it does with a computer

I say Xbox needs to make the Xbox One power off USB when you turn the One off

Please fix this issue Xbox
