External Drive Support/ Undo Xbox One External Drive Format

Good afternoon,

I tried to format my 1.8 TB external drive in order to be able to play movies from the drive onto the Xbox One, unaware that this was not yet a capability. Reading the forums etc I now understand that this is not the case. I really enjoyed that capability
with the Xbox 360, and I was saddened that this was not a capability on Day 1. It's been about 9 months now, and the fact that it's still not a capability angers me a great deal.

What's more, I now can't use my External Hard Drive with my computer and restore my backup files to the drive. I moved everything onto my computer before I formatted the drive, so everything is still there, but now my computer doesn't recognize my hard drive.

I don't really want to use my External Hard Drive to save game data, only play my movies. I would like to do one of two things:

1. Ideally, I'd like to be able to switch the drive from my Xbox One to my computer at will, in a similar way to the Xbox 360.
   
2. Failing that, I'd like to be able to undo the Xbox One formatting on my external drive so that my computer can recognize the drive again.

No because each system has a different file system and will need to format the drive once it is plugged in.

Xbox One and Wii U support external drives. PS4 does not.

Sorry to hear that you're not satisfied with the hard drive storage ability. Although there is no way to reformat the hard drive as yet perhaps you should put a suggestion in the feedback forums for them to add that ability.

Also, they are coming out with a playback feature for the Xbox One. You'll be able to either stream from your computer or from a usb device as you like. You can read more about it at Major Nelson's blog.

 

As the possibility of using an external harddrive with the new mediaplayer app is coming with the September update, you may just format your drive again on your computer and then use it exactly the same way like you used to do with the 360. The mediaplayer
app is able to read ntfs formatted drives.

If your drive is not being recognized by your computer please try to reformat it with the One. If still not working, please use the disk management console on your pc and have the drive repartitioned.

 

I'm having trouble with this too. I was hoping I could use my drive for games and movies. It's 4TB, plenty of room for both, but as soon as I formatted it for the Xbox One, I could no longer access it on my PC.

 

Meanwhile I got the information that it should be working if just reassigning a drive letter to the external harddrive on the pc with the discmanagent. This should fix your issue.
