External Drive Problems

Alright, here's the story. I went through about 2 hours of support for my external drive that wouldn't play any of the games downloaded onto it. I plugged the drive into both xboxes and both could barely read the drive alone. Now however, the drive isn't
read at all. I can't play any of my games on the drive anymore. I was told by support to reformat it on my laptop and was also told that when plugged into the laptop, the drive wouldn't be able to be read on my consoles anymore. And so far that's the case.

Anybody having this issue too? If anybody has a fix to this, that too would be appreciated tons!

(P.S: I've tried all the troubleshoot steps and reset the console three times.)

I recently bought a 4TB WD My Book to use as my external drive. The problem I'm having is when I put my XB1 into standby the drive will constantly spin up, stop, spin up, stop, etc for a long while until it finally goes to sleep. If I turn the XB1 completely off the drive turns off as it should. I've got the "turn off storage when xbox is off" setting checked so I don't understand what the deal is. I'm worried that this will shorten the lifespan of the drive because of all the constant cycling on and off. Has anyone with an external powered HDD encountered this issue?

do you have that box checked that says "turn off external devices on standby" or something like that? That might be the issue.

 

Did support have you re-format the drive? If so, everything on that drive has been wiped.

If you are unable to format it again for games and apps once you plug it back into the console then its dead.

External Drives sometimes fail.

Buy a new one and re-download all of your games to it. I recommend a Seagate. Hasn't failed me yet. 4+ years old.
