External drive keeps ticking on and off

Hi all, i recently noticed that the external hard drive attached to my console began whirring and going silent intermittently while the system is off. This has not been normal for my system and only began today. Anyone else notice this, and is it
a problem?

I have the SAME PROBLEM..I have the XBOX ONE X and a Western Digital 8TB USB/Adapter external hard drive..I always keep my xbox one x on instant on mode but everything is unchecked, like searching for updates, etc..so that it will NOT turn on I do it manually,
its checked off to turn off the xbox one when turned off, never had an issue til the recent update, when off the hard drive every few minutes will make a tick sound and a hum sound then turn off..every few min, thought it was the hard drive, reformatted it
yesterday, did the same darn thing, so I put the xbox one x into energy saving mode and guess what, PROBLEM SOLVED..but I cant stand energy save mode, so its something to do with this update and the hard drive with instant on mode, not sure what it is but
its VERY annoying wish someone could figure it out

@ - You say that your drive turns off properly when you use energy saving mode, however, mine does not. The light on the hard drive goes out, making it appear that the drive has turned off, however, the drive inside does not spin down and continues
to spin endlessly. If I touch the case, I can feel it spinning and the case stays warm. Is this happening to you too?

Again, these issues only started happening after the latest update. Before this update, my hard drive was performing as expected in both instant on and energy saving mode.

There is a setting from the app that you can download from Western Digital.com that allows you to turn off the blinking light that is what I did when I first got the drive, I could not stand the constant flashing lights in instant on mode so I turned it
off..something definitely is up with the October update, the drive ONLY turns off for me in energy saving mode, I mean using energy saving mode is OK but Im not a fan of it I really like instant on but if I have to wait 2 min in order to ensure I don't near
it working all the time(Every 3 minutes I will hear it spinning, humming, and making a crack sound, maybe its a hiss not sure) then it will stop..never had the issue til this update..called Microsoft about it several times, sorry to say their customer support
people when you call is zero help, had one woman be SO nasty to me, saying "Oh its supposed to do that" she was an idiot, all I know is whenever the hard drive would start working if I put my hand on top of the console it would be warm to the touch and it
would be working, even with everything checked off(Download new updates, turn off hard drive when off) it would still do it so something internally with this update caused it so will just leave it alone til the next update comes out

Thanks for sharing this. I can confirm there was no update occurring, no notification or anything in the queue when powered on
