External drive keeps ticking on and off

Hi all, i recently noticed that the external hard drive attached to my console began whirring and going silent intermittently while the system is off. This has not been normal for my system and only began today. Anyone else notice this, and is it a problem?

"When Xbox is off, turn off storage" not working.

I thought I'd give instant on a try, to realize my external is quite noisy. So I tried ticking the "When Xbox is off, turn storage off" option to find my external still staying on. I tried hard rebooting it and ticking/unticking the option several times
to no avail. Is there a fix?

I thought about the hard drive, however I'm using an external hard drive which doesn't make any noise whatsoever. If the games are running off the external drive then would the internal one still be in use during games? It's now making a kind of whirring
noise on halo mcc along with the ticking noise. The whirring isn't present on Fifa 15 or gta v, just the annoying constant loud ticking. Certainly sounds a bit poorly, I'd upload a video of it but can't seem to do that on here. I'll have to send it in for
repair yet again. It's beyond a joke really, third time sending it in in a matter of weeks. Anyone from Microsoft have any thoughts on this shambles?

 

It will depend if its downloading something while it is in stand by of you have that featurw on of course and if not then I dont know what can ot be?!?

I've noticed that as well with my external hdd keeps coming on then off as doesn't go sleep now since the October update and all my games are updated on my console so it doesn't need keep ticking on & off. I've tried the options that said on here try sort
it out on my thread done about it so far nothing works for this. I'm now thinking the October software update has effected the usb plug & play to why external doesn't go sleep anymore.

Thanks for sharing this. I can confirm there was no update occurring, no notification or anything in the queue when powered on

 

Does your external hard drive have a usb port as we as an external power supply or does the Usb power the hard drive itself? Secondly, is it set to instant on or power saving? There have been reports of problems with externally powered drives not getting
or hearing the go to sleep signal or signal which puts it into standby when console shuts down and therefore stays on. Some will go into standby but not power on again after console is powered back on. What drive are you using?

I have the SAME PROBLEM..I have the XBOX ONE X and a Western Digital 8TB USB/Adapter external hard drive..I always keep my xbox one x on instant on mode but everything is unchecked, like searching for updates, etc..so that it will NOT turn on I do it manually,
its checked off to turn off the xbox one when turned off, never had an issue til the recent update, when off the hard drive every few minutes will make a tick sound and a hum sound then turn off..every few min, thought it was the hard drive, reformatted it
yesterday, did the same darn thing, so I put the xbox one x into energy saving mode and guess what, PROBLEM SOLVED..but I cant stand energy save mode, so its something to do with this update and the hard drive with instant on mode, not sure what it is but
its VERY annoying wish someone could figure it out

I have a 4TB Western Digital Black Drive and I have had it for 3 years and it has always been making a ticking sound. It's mainly noticeable when the console is in Instant On Mode and when something is downloading.

 

After having this problem myself since the October update and with all the help I've had to sort it out none of it worked seems to be with something to do with the instant-on option. And now today My external hdd died after been stuck on for half day doesn't
come on or be recognised by xbox or if plug it in to my pc.

 

damn Im sorry about your external drive dying..that seriously sucks!!! Yeah it has to do with the instant on function I think, never had this issue before til the update came out..so what I did is Im using energy saving mode and auto sign in with my controller
so at least it wont be so bad, til they come out with a fix, basically I reformatted my hard drive yesterday for NO reason, if I had known then what I know now would have never done it, so now I have to download 100+ games all over again

I don't know if it's related, but today, when I turned on my Xbox my hard drive, was disconnected for some reason and I had to plug it back in for some reason. Hopefully, the issue doesn't persist though.
