My son's external drive has broken and all his games are saved on it ! I have taken it to be repaired and they have said it cant be repaired and they cant retrieve the data ! Is there any way to restore his games onto a new drive ????

Hi,

Don't go and buy a new hard drive just yet, it may not be faulty.

Sometimes drives can become currupt and unformat themselves. Connect this drive to a PC and try disk management to re-initise it. You'll still need to download the games, but you may not need a new drive.

All he will have to do is go out and download the games again. Unfortunately, that is the only way since you can't recover the data from the other drive.

For disc based games, all you need do is insert the disc and reinstall, for digital titles, from the Home screen, if you navigate to

My Games & Apps> Ready to Install

the games that your son owns already will all be in there. Just press A on the game you want to install and you can either 'Install All' or 'Choose what to install'

Install All will select both the game and any and all extra Downloadable Content (DLCs) your son owns, the Choose option lets you choose which bits you want to install.

Most game saves go to the cloud based service on Xbox Live, so should hopefully be accessible once the games have reinstalled on the new drive

Sadly you need to redownload every game again but the saved data is in the cloud so your son shouldn't have lost any progress at all you only need to sync the save data again

Any game he's purchased digitally on his account can easily be redownloaded by going to My Games & Apps then Ready to Install.

All his saves are safe on both the console and the Cloud as they are not stored on the external hard drive.
