Why does my 4tb external drive keep disconnecting my controllers no matter what I do. I've reset multiple times, tried formatting the drive using xbox app to controller, and even have tried to hardwire the controller to the xbox bit none of these are solving the issue.

    :)

Just started to have this problem with the same 4tb hard drive as everyone else here, has anyone found a solution? I’ve tried for like 3 hours and cant figure it out. Or should I just buy a different drive and if so let me know recommendations for the series s.

Have you found any solutions? I've had this problem for months but only now i discovered it was because of the external hard drive.

The drive I have is a 4tb xbox certified seagate drive. I have talked to some friends and a few think the updateay have corrupted the drive. I tried reformattingit and other similar solutions but it still won't work. My guess is that it's just the drives themselves and the problem is the update. (I say this because the night before the update it was fine then the afternoon after it started having problems). I also remember getting it from Walmart about a year ago. EDIT: I also have the reconnect issue a couple minutes after reconnecting and I hope the issue can be resolved by means outside of getting a new one (I will gladly hard reset my drive if that's what it takes). Also already reset my xbox completely and still won't work.

    Hello Alex,

My name is Udit and am an Independent advisor. I will do everything I can do to help.

    Please consider the following
    1) Update the Xbox controller firmware by going to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
    2) Update your Xbox firmware
    3) Resync your controller by pressing the Xbox button for 5-6 seconds and then restarting the controller by pressing the Xbox button by pressing it for 5-6 secons

    Thank you again.

As of typing this I have just tried the last solution you gave me and even tried all while it was plugged in. While trying to resync the controller when the drive was plugged in. Both the xbox and controller flashed repeatedly without slowing or going solid and instead the controller turned off. It says both controller and console are up to date and that it was successfully installed the day the update went out.

tl;dr: Is the external drive you're using "Xbox Certified"? Is it drawing power from the Xbox or does it have its own power supply?

An uncertified device that draws USB power could be the culprit.

I had exactly the same problem with a Segate USB 3.0 drive and my Xbox Series S.

I've been using the drive fine with the console for at least a year, but in the last few weeks, I started experiencing the controller issue. It affects any controller (including an Xbox One controller I still have) connected wirelessly. I suspect a console firmware update has caused this intolerance of uncertified devices.

As soon as I disconnect physically the hard drive, the problem goes away.

When I reconnect the hard drive... so far the problem hasn't come back, but I suspect this is an issue over the amount of power the drive draws interferring with the internal wireless receiver (which is likely powered from the same USB bus). So this is a temporary fix at best.

EDIT: wrote this too soon... a few more minutes after reconnecting the drive, the problem re-occurs. :-(

I note that Seagate make "Xbox Certified" external drives, so I'll probaby try one of those, at least to eliminate the excuse of "unsupported" from any future support tickets I raise!
