  1. External drive causing xbox one to turn off

I tried turning my xbox one on with the external drive plugged in (what i usually do) and the console would come on but turn off after a few seconds. I browsed through some forums and one person said they unplugged their external drive and it worked. I
tried this and it does work but if i try and plug my external drive in, even with a different cable and port, it shuts off the xbox. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

    :)

Should External Hard Drives be switched off?

I recently purchased an external hard drive to add memory space to my Xbox One, and I'm not sure whether I should turn it off when I turn my Xbox off. Currently I think it sits in idle mode when the Xbox is off. I've read that the Xbox constantly looks for
patches when in sleep mode which would require the hard drive to be on, but I've also heard that its not really recommended to have the hard drive on all the time as it can affect the performance, and that there is a setting that turns off the hard drive when
    the Xbox turns off.

In short, is it advisable to have the external hard drive switched on or off when the Xbox is switched off?

  3. Need help! External Hard Drive Purchase

The hard drive I bought works great, easy to set up. Also noticiable faster loading times for game installed on the external.

Unfortunately when my Xbox is turned off it doesnt put the external in sleep mode so have to turn on and off the external manually.

External drive causing xbox one to turn off

Hi! While I didn't ran into this problem myself, I know others have experienced it in the past. In order to find out if it's due to hardware or possibly the operating system, I'd recommend to do a factory reset with keeping your games and apps (so that
you don't have to install them again): Reset Xbox One Console to Factory Defaults

    Hey Morgan Vincent,

It could be an issue with the external hard drive since the console seems to be working fine when it is not plugged in. You might want to look into "repairing" it by plugging it into any PC, and if that doesn't work try formatting. Hope this helps. Let us
know if you need further help!

    Unplug Console

Does the external hard drive ever turn off when the Xbox is off?

The console has a setting to turn external storage off when the console is turned off. It's in the power settings. However, for some reason, some externals do not turn off when the console is turned off, even when the "When Xbox is off, turn off storage" setting is enabled.

The second thing that will cause most externals to go to sleep is inactivity. Usually there is a setting in the drive's own firmware that says "go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity" or whatever.

    Here's what I would recommend: -

    1. If it's not already enabled, enable the "When Xbox is off, turn off storage" setting in the console's power settings, then test to see if the drive turns off when the Xbox is turned off.

    2. If option 1 is no help and the drive never turns off, disable that setting, then see if the external turns off after a period of inactivity once the Xbox has been turned off.

If you unplug the drive when the console is off, obviously, if you have the console set to automatically update your games/apps, it won't be able to update anything on the external while the Xbox is off as it's not connected. That is the primary downside of what you're currently doing.

What can I do if my game freeze how the apps work fine

Do you have an external hard drive plugged into your console, Rico? A corrupted hard drive may cause issues as well.

If you have one plugged in, please unplug the external hard drive and then perform a powercycle on your console, keep the hard drive unplugged before testing any of your games.

    1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds. The console will turn off.

Xbox One S restarts on power-off

So you have two 2TB external hard drives plugged into the Xbox? What happens if you unplug them and turn the Xbox off? I’m wondering if the external drives could be powering the console on.

Otherwise, a common cause for unexpected powering on could be due to the Xbox One being plugged into a power strip or surge protector. See if plugging it directly into the wall outlet stops the problem.
