Exotic gear question

I've heard, and read online that you can only have 1 piece of exotic gear, and 1 exotic weapon equipped at a time. If that is true, what is the point in owning more than one piece of exotic armor? Exotic weapons I can understand, since you can switch them
out during battle. But if you can only wear one piece of exotic armor at a time, why should I buy more from Xur, or hope for engrems for it? After all, I can only get the benefits from one piece. Any thoughts?

I have two Exotic Helmets, each have perks that are primarily for a specific subclass. So depending on which play style I switch to that subclass and the helmet which is associated with it. I'm also going to be trying to get one which would be more helpful
in pvp compared to pve.

So its just like the weapons, you switch them out for different play styles.

 

Supposedly in the future you will be able to wear more than one exotic piece of armor...or so I've heard.

 

^I hope not I broke most of my exotics down to level up the ones I have.
