The backward compatible game issue has been affecting more users, there is no official confirmation about what is causing it.

Some players successfully fixed the issue by changing the Port Selection on the connection settings, from automatic to manual.

Go to Profile and System > Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings> Alternate Port Selection > Manual > Choose any from the Menu starting with a 4 or 5 (Example: 49215 or 57165).

Unfortunately all backwards compatible games are experiencing issues with the online portion of the game and this has been ongoing for quite some time now.

I'm able to open up the XBOX app just fine, but can't get to the general settings area, IMG2 as above.

If I try to launch a game, or download a new game. It is telling me, that the gaming services needs to be installed. And when I click on install, it shows a popup on the notification area, that gaming services is getting installed/got installed.

It happens everytime, even if I already installed the gaming services on the machine.

On the games with Epic/EA launcher, it is constantly trying to install the launcher even tho they are already installed and even logged in.

When I say online multiplayer I can play with other people online In games such as fortnite. But I can also play the gold games that are included as well even tho I'm sharing someone's gold live.
