Live has been shut down for the original Xbox so it will no longer connect. Only a Xbox 360 or Xbox One will connect.

There is currently an issue with Live https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live-status You'll want to try again after that clears up.

More than likely you have an Xbox 360. Is it white or black? Is there a hard drive that you can see at the top of the console?

Every controller for all of the Xbox models, new or old, has a central Xbox button that will bring up a menu or guide.

If you have the Xbox 360 I suggest clearing the system cache of the hard drive. To do so you have to go into the system settings and find the storage section. From there I believe you press Y for more options and clear the cache should be an option there.
