1. Error - Games on WP7 - "Cannot Find Server"

• I was told that I could use both a WP7 and WP8 device without an issue.
• Based on this, I purchased a WP7 so that I could get some games that are not available for my WP8.
• When I try to access the games that I want to purchase via the Windows Phone Marketplace / Store via the IE app I get the following message:
• Other web pages and sites work just fine.
• When I try to access the games that I want to purchase via the Games tile, all I see is "no results" on the main screen
• When I search from the Games tile / app, I get "We couldn't find a match. Try again later."
• I've tried using my Win8 laptop, but it does not let me purchase the items. In fact, it doesn't even show me an option to buy or try the games.
• What can I do to purchase games on my WP7 device?

:)
Was hoping the update for Smartglass on WP7 the other day was gonna sort out the "touch" issue, sadly no, so ios users still get a better service from MS than users of their own platform.... Pfffft!
'Touch' issue? Wassat then sir?
Games that use smartglass properly with the enhanced features, like Halo 4, don't do it on WP7.... They throw up an error saying "this device is missing features". The feature missing being something called "touch".

Only works properly on IOS and devices running W8 (WP8, Surface, etc)

Pretty crappy of MS really.

All the dashboard/IE control works fine, just the extra features for games.... :-(
Ah, i see. Cheers chuck!!

Error - Games on WP7 - "Cannot Find Server"

Hey there Hyrule,

Why are you trying to do it via IE? I'll use the IE route first; doing it all on the phone follows.

• Have you registered the device to your MSA? (WP7 will still call it WLiD)
• If so, log in at windowsphone.com. I would recommend doing this from a PC rather than the phone itself.
• Towards the right-hand side you should see a reference to My Phone. It may even mention by name your WP8 device.
• Hover over that, and if it's registered your WP7 device will appear at the bottom of the list. Click it. This makes the WP7 device the active device on the site.
• Now, back to the phone. Go to Settings/Find My Phone and set that up, this will enable us to start the download automatically from the site.
• Make sure the phone stays awake, to keep the network connection (preferably WiFi) active.
• Go back to the website, search for the apps you want to download and you should see buy/install/try options.
• Follow through on one you want to download and you should be able to start the download automatically on the WP7 device (that's the setting we toggled earlier) from the website.
Let me know how that goes. I've had no issues downloading on my own device so do not see why you might be having issues.

However, you may have better success using the phone's own Marketplace. If the URL from the page you are on using your phone is in the format "windowsphone.com/en-US/store/app/app-name/[string of characters]" and does not open the Marketplace, change the
link to the following format: windowsphone.com/s?appid=[string of characters]

• You only want to keep the last letters/numbers after the last forward slash, and that should force the phone to open the listing within phone's own Marketplace and hopefully you have better luck that way.
• Example, Ilomilo is at http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/store/app/ilomilo/6d8088a0-77d6-df11-a844-00237de2db9e, but by using http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=6d8088a0-77d6-df11-a844-00237de2db9e you force the phone to open
the app in the Marketplace app. You may also notice that the latter link is even region-free.
• WP8 is usually better at opening the original link within Marketplace, but from memory WP7 tends to needs the converted link.

Thanks for the quick reply, Maxen.

I'll try and respond to everything in order of how you presented it.

I tried doing it via IE because when I try to access the games app/tile and click "Get more games" every option displays the text "No results." Searching for a game using the Apps and Games search results in "We couldn't find a match. Try a different spelling
or search term." Even for games that I know are Windows Phone 7 (the whole reason that I bought the phone)

• Yes, the phone is tied to my WLID. That's the first thing that I did.
• I did previously log into the site via my Win 8 laptop.
• My WP8 is listed as is my new WP7 device. Selecting the phone via that box seems to make no difference.
• I have now gone to "find my phone" and clicked to two available boxes "Save my location" and "Get results faster".
• I've tried using the same links from my laptop on my phone. I've noticed, however, that despite my phone's region being set to USA, it says on the phone marketplace website that "Your phone's current Country/Region setting prevents you from getting apps
on the web. Please go to the Store on your phone, and then try to download the app."
• Using the "App ID" link guide that you suggested did allow the phone to bring up the game, however it does not provide an option to purchase the game on the phone.
Is it just being weird because I didn't set up the phone as a working phone? All I'm using is the wi-fi connection so that I can play older games on it. Do I have to set up a full phone account to use it? Or am I just out of luck because I bought a used
phone? It connects to my Live account; I can see my gamertag, Gamerscore, e-mail, etc. I just can't access the marketplace. The phone is an HTC 7 Pro U.S. Celluar MWO6885US

Selecting it on the website should, when you search, bring up results for wp7 apps rather than wp8.

Under Settings/region+language, are all those settings set to English (US)?

The other thing to check is your privacy settings. Doing this on Xbox.com, under Xbox 360 privacy settings, the vary last option should be Xbox Music, Video and Windows Phone. You'll want to make sure that's set to enabled or allowed.

I don't have a SIM card in mine either. It still seems to work fine. What are some of the games you are trying to download? It sounds like potentially some of them have been removed from the Store (their listings remain, the ability to download them again
as a first purchase is gone, you can only re-download if you own already), although it's hard to gauge whether that's the case here.

I don't see it being a used phone being a problem. You've set it up with your own WLiD, it should be good to go.

If you go to the Store, you should see some featured apps or highlighted listings on the front page and most sub-menus. Could you try downloading any of those as a test? Try Facebook, Twitter, Xbox Extras, Minesweeper (the Xbox-enabled game from MS Studios).
I just want to make sure you can actually download something.

7. Region and language settings are set to English / USA. I've checked the WP7. I've had no problems accessing the marketplace on my WP8 (all of my settings for everything are English / USA. I just tried to download the facebook app (logged into facebook from
the IE app on the phone, clicked the link for the Windows Phone App) but while the marketplace shows up and shows me the page for the app, it only shows me the info, reviews, and screenshots. It does not give me the option to download it.

The specific games I'm trying to get (at least for now) are Fable Coin Gold and Ghostscape. Both are still available.

Error - Games on WP7 - "Cannot Find Server"

OK, that's weird.

On my WP7 I have no issues with this, and for those two games I can see the store listings and get the options to both try and buy. I know of no reason why you would not...

Like yours, that phone currently has no sim card and is running purely on WiFi. And even then, I didn't think this would make a difference.

Hm... actually, something just occurred to me. Have you updated the device through Zune? If you do not have at least WP7.5 (7.8 is the latest) then I think I remember (and this is now two years ago) that the Store would no longer work. Confusingly enough,
in Settings/About the version numbers should be 7.10.XXXX.XXX (for the update called 7.5). And if you are at a lower version number, your phone will take a long time to update. It will have to do every single update to catch up all the way to 7.8. But if this
is the case, you should be able to start downloading apps after this is complete.

9. Ok, looking at the About section, it says that I have OS version 7.07392.0; the Update section says that I have an update available but I have no idea how to get it. It mentions connecting the phone to my computer, but that does nothing. This really shouldn't
be this difficult, should it?

I think we may just have zeroed in on the problem.

You need to download the Zune desktop application (NOT the same one as you use for WP8) and connect the phone via USB. Once connected, unlock the phone (swipe up lock screen, enter passkey if applicable). Then in the bottom left click the little phone icon
and on the next screen you should see a button to update. If not, from that screen click Settings in the top right and on the left select Update.

Let it do its thing. I reckon you probably have quite a few updates to get through and that can take some considerable time. It will do the complete update process for one update before checking again for new updates, then it will start again with the next
one.

Note: I do not exactly remember whether each time it detects a new update that you need to click to accept, so maybe watch the first update complete fully before you leave it alone for ages expecting it to complete.

This link should let you download and install the Zune software:

11. So, I just got done with a chat with HTC support and it appears that I'm out of luck with this phone. I'll still try your Zune suggestion to see if that works, however. Here's the support chat.

Hi, Korinne.

‎5‎:‎07‎:‎32‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

Hello Kent, how can I help you today?

‎5‎:‎07‎:‎46‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

So, I just bought this Windows Phone 7 phone via ebay used, so that I could get access to Windows Phone 7 games...

‎5‎:‎08‎:‎35‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

The phone works great, except that I can't access the Windows Phone marketplace. Somebody suggested updating the OS to version 7.5 (the phone is 7.0 something) but I can't figure out how to get it to update.

‎5‎:‎08‎:‎54‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

The Marketplace is not available for devices that are pre-Mango update (which is Windows 7.5), but your device wasn't updated to 7.5.

‎5‎:‎09‎:‎02‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

I'm sorry about that.

‎5‎:‎09‎:‎20‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

So, there is no way to update the phone, even though it says "Update Available" in the settings section?

‎5‎:‎09‎:‎37‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

No, there's not.

‎5‎:‎10‎:‎10‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

Why does the phone check for updates if it can't update? I'm a little confused by this.

‎5‎:‎10‎:‎50‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

Your device as manufactured in 2011, so it is normal for it to check for updates, but they are not available to pull from the carrier's server anymore.

‎5‎:‎12‎:‎20‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

Ok. I wish that I'd known that before I bought it. But I guess I'm glad that I only spent $30 instead of $100. All I want is to be able to get access to the games only available on WP7 devices (I have a WP8 phone, but some games are only
for WP7). Is there a WP7 phone that I can get that will still access WP7's marketplace?

‎5‎:‎13‎:‎37‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

The Titan and Titan II have 7.5.

‎5‎:‎14‎:‎11‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

Ok, thank you. Hopefully I can get them for cheap, as I don't need them for phone service. Have a nice day, Korinne. You've been a great help. Thanks again.

‎5‎:‎14‎:‎37‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

You're welcome! Is there anything else I can help you with?

‎5‎:‎15‎:‎08‎ ‎PM CustomerKent

No, thank you. Do I type "Bye" to end the chat, or just press the Exit at the top of the screen?

‎5‎:‎15‎:‎27‎ ‎PM AgentKorinne

After this chat there will be a short survey screen asking about your experience here today. If you have the time, please check that out and tell us how we did. Your feedback is always highly appreciated! Thanks for choosing HTC, have
yourself a great day!

This article says differently:

www.wpcentral.com/us-cellular-brings-8107-windows-phone-update-htc-7-pro

7.10.8107 is a higher version number than Mango (7.10.7720).

Reasonably, you should be able to get to, and past, Mango...

It would be interesting to see what you find when trying it.

Edit: It having been available at one point is a little different to "not available anymore". So we'll have to see what you find...
