Error code E74

Error 74 (E74) would indicate hardware failure; your only options would be to send it for repair or to purchase a new one.

You see error code E74 when you use your Xbox 360 console. Error code E74 is preceded by the following message:

System error. Contact Xbox Customer Support.

Status code: E74

This means that your Xbox 360 has experienced hardware failure and needs to be repaired.

Solution

To get your Xbox 360 console repaired at our service center,
Submit a repair request.

Note The warranty period for the E74 error is three years from the original purchase date of the console. If your console is not covered by the three-year warranty period, you can still get your console repaired for a fee.

The warranty period for this purchase is 3 years from the date of purchase. It sounds like your console just chose a bad time to finally bite the bullet.

I don't think an update would have killed your console.
