comcast xfinity router/modem

Wireless connection

Update Error Code : 3cd6-445e-1600-267f-c000-0185

What you've tried: I have tried EVERYTHING. We have a required update to use our kinect. Can't connect to xbox live, tried using a usb for update and get this message. Repeatedly.

We've tried all the steps listed, including clearing cache, disabling firewall, etc. We've never tried to connect to xbox live, and now we aren't able to (connects to internet but fails to connect to live)

Added a separate 32gb usb for storage (we've never downloaded anything, but apparently this is a 4gb update) & still no luck. We merely want to continue using the games we have (which are all kinect type).

I've spent an insane amount of time on this- and purchased a new flash drive and we still can't use our xbox.

HELP!

:)

It seems like you're trying to update from an almost 3 year old system version.

It would be helpful to know, what kind of Xbox 360 console you use. Does the console have a hard drive (usually about 250GB storage), or did you get one with 4GB Flash memory?

You can check for that if you go to the dashboard, then all the way to the right to the settings hub.

There go to the System tile in the upper left, and then to the Storage option. This should list all connected storage devices. What does it say there?

The update you do requires about 200 MB of free storage. If the console is a 4GB model, you might have to provide additional space by adding an USB Drive.

However, due to the old system version, you can't use more than 16GB of storage on your USB drive. Also make sure the 32GB USB you plugged in as storage is REALLY configured as storage. If it doesn't show up in the storage settings screen, try another USB
drive.

After you have checked that your console can access the additional USB drive as storage (i.e. it shows up as a "Memory Unit" in the storage settings), use A SECOND flash USB drive to update the console.

On your PC, click on this link. It should download a file called "SystemUpdate_17502_USB.zip".

While the file is downloading, plug the second USB flash drive into your PC, and make sure it is FAT or FAT32 formatted. On your PC, right click the USB drive and in the properties under "File System" it should show FAT or FAT32. If it says NTFS, you will
have to format the drive to FAT.

After the download has finished, double click the "SystemUpdate_17502_USB.zip" file.

You should see a "$Systemupdate" folder.

Copy that folder to the USB flash drive.

After the copy process is finished, safely remove the USB drive from your PC and go to your console.

Turn the console off, and insert the USB drive into the front USB ports.

Depending on the model of your console, you should have a small button next to the front flap for the USB ports, or a small round button next to the two Memory Unit slots.

Hold that small button and turn the console on by pressing and releasing the large power button.

Keep the small button held down.

Eventually, the console will tell you it found an update.

Now, let the console update.

Did that work?

If your console was successfully updated to the Version 17502, you can now use any USB hard drive of up to 2 Terabyte to store game downloads.

This is great, if you have a gold membership, and get two free games every month as a download.

5. Thank you for the response. It is a 4gb console with 1.1gb free. We've never downloaded anything so that must be what the console started with. I had a live chat with customer service and that's who told me it was a 4gb update (which seemed ridiculous)
so I purchased another flash drive, configured it in the console (it is FAT32) and my storage recognizes it as 15.9gb storage in addition to the 1.1gb of the console. It does recognize the update and gets to about 80% before it gives me the error code.

The console hadn't told us the update was required until a couple of months ago- the unit is from 2012. The only thing I hadn't tried previously was holding the small button next to the flap down. I even deleted the update from the flash drive and downloaded
it again. Same error code.

We are also unable to connect to xbox live. We'd never tried until we needed the update, but now we can connect to the internet but it fails after that. I even took it to a neighbor to see if they could get it to work on their network or if there was something
I wasn't doing & they couldn't get it to connect either. (or download the update)

Is the problem that I'm missing updates in between?

Is there anything else I can try? I'm sure the updates make the games better, but we only play kinect games and it won't let us without the update.

Again- I appreciate any suggestions you can give!

Yes, this is ridiculous. As the console has (if I remember correctly) only about 256MB free to store the system in it's system Flash, and the actual Update File being only 150MB uncompressed, that information was wrong.

However, even despite the system software update being "only" 150MB, the software needs to store some temporary stuff, and requires about 200MB of free storage space. But since you say you have over 1GB of free space left, that shouldn't be a problem.

If the console isn't connected to the Internet or Xbox Live (which is quite a shame, even if you use the console only for some Kinect games), it shouldn't find updates.

However, newer games often come with a console software update right on the disc. So games that require newer system software can update consoles that aren't connected to the internet via the disc.

It's basically the same thing you do with the USB stick now.
Well, Xbox Live requires all consoles to be up to date with their system software. So when you try to connect the console online, it'll see that a new System Software is out, and will try to install it. The console will not connect to Live fully, unless
the system software is current.

So the console not connecting to Live and showing the update prompt is normal.
Is there anything else I can try? I'm sure the updates make the games better, but we only play kinect games and it won't let us without the update.
Well, system updates do not make games "better". Sometimes System updates are absulutely necessary for some games to work at all.

System updates however make the whole Xbox experience better by providing means to stream videos from your PC to the console, or allowing the Xbox 360 to access internet in buildings that require you to sign in on a website (e.g. hotels) and other things
that affect the whole console.

For games, every time you launch a game with a console connected to Live, the game checks for updates, and if there are updates for the specific game, will download them. And those will make games better.

But back to your issue:

Can you try one additional thing:

Turn the console off, and wait for about 30 seconds. Then remove the USB drive with the update on it.

Turn the console on, and on the dashboard go to the settings hub on the far right.

Go to the system tile in the upper left, and to the storage options.

Now highlight any storage device, and press the Y button.

In the new menu, choose to clear the system cache.

Repeat that process three times.

Then back on the drive selection screen, press the following button combination: RB LB X RB LB X

Let the console do it's maintenance thing, and when the console restarts, insert the drive with the update again.

Then the console should again detect the update from the USB drive, and now hopefully will do the complete update.

7. I had actually tried all of those things previously, but wasn't sure I'd cleared the cache on both storage devices before doing the maintenance thing. I tried all of them again and still get about 80% of the update extracted before it gives me the error
message.

I tried inserting a game we've played lots of times previously and it says it requires the system update to be able to play, and since we can't get the update our console is essentially useless.

I know it is silly that we didn't connect to live before. Our daughter was much younger when we got the system and didn't want to be able to stream or download back then. Since we only have a handful of kinect games to play we didn't really need to be connected
to live. I can't say for certain that nobody's tried to connect- and perhaps that's where this problem began....

So still no update.

I am happy to try something else if there are other options you can think of!

Thanks again for giving me the steps to try. I'm hoping this isn't a moderately costly device heading to the garbage. Error Code : 3cd6-445e-1600-267f-c000-0185 :(

That's odd.

Just to cover everything: Did you get the console new from a trustable store? Or did you get the console used or from an unknown shop like ebay or something like that? Or was the console in repair because of a disc drive defect, and it was repaired in a
non-Microsoft repair shop?

The reason I ask: In the console there is a lot of cryptography stuff going on to prevent illegal copies of games to run on a Xbox.

If the console has been modified by a previous user, or was incorrectly repaired by a non-Microsoft repair center, it could be, that the drive and console motherboard don't "cryptographically fit" and the update can't proceed.

During the time you got your console, the copy protection method on the console was changed, which meant that the firmware in the drive had to be updated in addition to the normal console firmware.

And if the drive was exchanged or modified, this might also prevent the update from working correctly.

But that is just speculation on my part.

If you are sure that you bought a 100% genuine console new from a store, that can be ruled out.

9. We got the console new via Amazon as part of a holiday bundle:

Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect Holiday Value Bundle

Sold by: Amazon.com LLC

$249.96

Condition: New

It was in a xbox box with what looked like new packaging, etc. We've never had it repaired- it had been working fine up until a few months ago. That's the last time I remember it being used. The next time my daughter tried to use it she told me it needed
an update to work. I briefly checked it out (even downloaded the update at that time, which is different than the current one) but when it didn't work right away I assumed I had not done something correctly and put it aside for when I would have more time
to work on it.

Is it possible that because we hadn't updated in 3+ years the current update isn't enough? I haven't tried the old update again- it didn't work last time, but I may not have applied it correctly.

I would love more suggestions. I know support says if you've tried all of these things you can ask for a repair- but I assume that means taking it to a Microsoft repair shop & I imagine the repair (if they can in fact repair it) will cost as much as the
console. Error Code : 3cd6-445e-1600-267f-c000-0185 :(

Sorry for the long delay.

Was the console just then connected to the Internet, or did your daughter insert a new game she just got?

Because if the console was offline, it couldn't get any updates then. And if it's a new game, then (in theory) you could just play another game that doesn't require the update, but that's not really a solution to the problem.

I don't think so, as the console updates are "cumulative". That means, no matter how many updates you skip, the latest update should in theory be able to update your console from whatever system version.

It MIGHT be, that the previously failed update is somewhere still "stuck" on the console. However, if you use the Button Combination I explain above (go to the Storage options, and on the screen where you select the storage drive press "RB LB X RB LB X")
should delete the failed update and revert everything back.

Well, the only two suggestions I can currently give are:

Use the Button combination to hopefully remove any failed update. Also you could again try the following method to clear a failed update: Turn the console off and hold down the small button next to the front USB flap. Keep that button held down while you
power up the console.

After that, insert the USB drive with the "$Systemupdate" folder again.

If you still get the error message, then I'm afraid the only way to resolve that is to have it sent in for repair.

As for pricing, you can check yourself if the price for replacement is adequate:

Simply go to https://devicesupport.microsoft.com and register your Xbox console there, if not already done so.

Then sign up the console for a repair. If the console is out of warranty (which I assume, as the warranty is "only" one year), the page will tell you how much it'll cost to repair the console.

If you don't want to pay that price you can still cancel it.

Just a small warning, in case you decide to buy a cheap used console to replace your console: Keep in mind what I said above about the crypto-stuff in the console. Less reputable sellers on ebay, Amazon Marketplace or Craigslist (or similar sites) might
try to sell off consoles that have been banned from Xbox Live or have been modified/repaired with replacement drives that fail(-ed) the update.

So beware when you decide to buy a used console. Even if the console seems to be running, it could be disabled with an upcoming update, because the previous owner tried to repair it himself.

So to sum it up: If again clearing the cache, then doing the button combination and finally restarting the console with the small button held down doesn't "persuade" the console in doing the update properly, I'm afraid the only thing you can do is send in
the console for repairs/replacement.
