Error 0x8027025A received when trying to read any disc (including blu rays and game discs)

Hey guys,

So I recently purchased an Xbox One X to replace my Xbox One S, and I hadn't had any problems with either until yesterday, when my Xbox One X stopped opening any apps from a disc. I couldn't watch a blu ray movie because the blu ray player app would give
me error code 0x8027025A with the message: "For some reason Blu-Ray Player took too long to start. (0x8027025a)". I tried with several different movie discs and games, and got the same message for all of them.

I tried all of the steps listed on Microsoft's Xbox support website, including:

Checking Xbox live service (it was fine)

Restarting the app (tried it a bunch of times, and always got the same message)

Restarted my console (did this several times, but it never fixed the problem)

Power cycle my console (still got the error message)

Finally, in desperation I factory reset my console and chose to keep all my games installed, and that fixed the problem and it is working fine again. I don't know what happened. Should I be worried that my disc drive is going bad? Or was it a software issue
that is fixed now?

I've had this happen before, usually right after a large update to the Xbox.

I th ink th elast time I had to do this was about a year ago, but no issues since.

Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Forums!

We understand it is frustrating since the Xbox One S will not read the Blu-ray discs. Now when you try to watch any Blu-ray discs, does the system display an error or message?

Does the console play Game discs or CDs? Also, please make sure you have the Blu-ray player installed on the console. This is not an app that is pre-installed.

Please check out the Disc and Blu-ray settings for more information.

Sounds like the laser in your console's Blu-ray drive has a hardware issue.

To test if your Xbox One X has issues reading discs, try playing a DVD movie disc. If can't read DVD movie discs either then your console has a hardware fault.

Note: It must be a DVD movie disc, not a Blu-ray movie disc.

There are two lasers in the Blu-ray drive, one for reading Blu-ray discs and one for DVD discs. Xbox One games use Blu-ray and the 360 console used a DVD drive.

thanks for reply, the blu ray app is installed but no difference still no playback from any discs and no error messages, just that nothing happens when game disc or blu ray inserted

I take it Blu-Ray disc movies are working okay? Have you tried many of the ones you own? Games are detected?

Bear in mind that the Xbox One S, One X and the current Series X actually have two lasers, one for reading DVD discs (including Xbox 360 discs) and one for reading Blu-Ray discs, which also includes Xbox games as they are also on BD-Disc.

If the DVD laser is giving out, it won't read certain DVD discs, and this is likely the reason for the issues you are experiencing. This is also why Blu-Rays and Xbox One games are not effected. There is nothing wrong with your DVD's, it's the console's optical drive that is faulty.
