Email & Passwords do not match

I have a Live account (not Gold). When I try to sign in to Live, I keep getting the message in the heading. But I can sign in to hotmail with no problem. My 360 is set up for auto sign in, so sometimes my profile (not always) is loaded when I reach the dashboard.
But I'm signed out if I try anything that requires Live access, since the email/password match 'fails'. Testing the network passed on everything. I've tried power cycling, deleting the cache, marketplace data, and system upgrade, but nothing has worked. .

My console insists that I either don't have a live account or email or password are wrong... funnily, I can logon here using same email & password. any suggestions as to how to convince my console that I do exsist...& that the email & password is correct...

Is it possible you use two-factor authentication on your Microsoft Account (MSA)? i.e. you have an authenticator app or receive a code by text message/email when logging into the MSA.

If so, use Solution 2 on this page:

support.xbox.com/.../error-code-8015d002

(I know it's not the error code you're seeing, but the steps in Solution 2 are what I reckon you should try.)

[1] I never saw an error code - Live simply refuses to recognize the password, even though I know it's correct.

[2] I use a yahoo address for verification. A friend suggested deleting the profile, resetting the password using the code, then re-downloading the profile and inputting the new password. Fail.

[3] So this hinges on a "security code" which I have yet to see, even though the password reset emails are almost instantaneous.

If this doesn't work, it just isn't worth the headaches. I'm sick & tired of having Oblivion & Skyrim freeze due to a badly fragmented cache. Thanks to sloppy implementation by MS, there is no defrag, only delete. And since the "One" is the new golden boy,
it is highly unlikely that this will ever be fixed.

 

Thanks to Outlook's convoluted and confusing menus, I was sent on a wild goose chase. I thought the code for the password would work, but no.

Ultimately, the grand solution laid out in the link didn't work either - the instructions plainly state "On your Xbox 360 console, sign in to Xbox Live using your Microsoft account email address and the app password you generated in step 3 instead of your
Microsoft account password." It doesn't work because the password box only accepts a max of 16 characters, while the recovery code is 25 characters (not including spaces).

 

And I know you have to have a smartphone to get an app password - but my 'phone' doesn't count, it doesn't even support java.

 

Problem solved - but I don't like the solution. There's no flag for when a password is too long. The hotmail account may accept the password, but it doesn't mean the console will (the message 'between 8/16 chars' doesn't specifically imply that higher or
lower than this limit is the reason why the login failed). And since longer, more complex passwords can mean better security, I can see the appeal of using a dedicated account solely for consoles. You may be limited to 16 characters, but if you're hacked,
at least your main account is safe. Don't know if this account has ever been hacked, but it doesn't really matter - I stopped using it for important things a while back. The only reason I still use it is for the 360.
