Email change, with old email staying active

    Hi,

When my partner got her child an xbox some years ago, she signed him up, but used her own hotmail.com address. This has created a problem as she needs to keep the email active as it is in daily use by her and everywhere I have looked states that if I completely remove her email from his gamer tag and replace it with a new one, her email address will be deleted.

Given he was a child (now a adult) with autism, she used hers. We have spent many a years helping him get ready for the moment he stands on own two feet. However we simply can't just make another email for her and he wants his own (which he now has), it makes sense to switch the emails now, but that can't happen because am being told that hers will be deleted which can't happen. Is it correct if I want to remove hers completely from his gamer tag, there is no way todo this without her email being deleted?

He has an active 6 months game pass and tons of games that are linked to her email address, these can't be transfered from an account to another can they?

What can I do other than make him lose all his content/trophies?

    :)

Don't worry about your questions, all of them are perfectly valid!

Regarding the accessibility of your partner's child with a new alias, everything will be accessible. It is just another e-mail address usable to sign in to the mother's account. Everything about the Microsoft Family will stay working the same way, because it is registered to the original Microsoft Account (mother's account), and also applies to the alias.

This issue is common, but sadly it isn't possible to transfer any progress from one account to the other. What I'd recommend you to do is to create a brand new account, where he will create all of the progress for his new games. For older games, the mother's account with an alias stays signed in on the Xbox, and is accessible at any point with the aliased e-mail address. This would be the easiest way to slowly phase out the mother's account on her son's Xbox console, but still keep it available in case he wants to continue the progress on a older game. Usually, on situations like this, parents create a child account under the Microsoft Family group, which allows to manage all settings for the child's account.
Thanks, I think this will be what we will do, create a new account and game share the old one until the Game Pass Ultimate expires in June and then remove the mother's account from his machine and get GPU for the new account.

If I read right, I will have to make the mother's account the HOME XBOX account to enable sharing of GPU, add his new account as another user, and then once the GPU has expired we remove her account and then set his account as the HOME XBOX account.

"Can I share Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on my home Xbox?

Yes, standard Xbox home sharing policies apply for both Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold. If you have an Ultimate subscription and have designated your home Xbox, you’ll automatically share your subscription with any profile signed in on that console."

Yeah, I have made the Microsoft Family account and I am already controlling his current and his brother's account. I will just add the new email to the Microsoft Family and slowly over the next year relax his account until we know he is able to manage on his own.

Unless anything I said above can't be done, I'll leave it there. Thank you again for your help.

    Hi Thanks,

Yes, she should have made him his own email, she was told by a family member that he needs to be on hers. When I meet her it was already set up. I am just trying to undo this mess.

basically adding an alias and then removing the old address will just delete the old address, the account still belongs to her, there is no way around this but to create a new account for him that should have been done as a child account in the first place. she can still add her account to his xbox and have it password protected and make it the home console so he can access all the purchased games on his new profile.

Hello ! I'm Claus, an Independent Microsoft Community Consultant for Xbox! Glad to be able to help you!

It is wonderful what you've done for your partner's child! But don't worry, we can help you out with that!

The problem is than once an account is create, the Xbox Live profile is actually an integral part of the Microsoft Account, which cannot be unlinked. It would be like moving the e-mail inbox to a new e-mail address, and when you send an e-mail to the old address, it goes to the new e-mail address. It sadly doesn't work like that.

But what you can do is to add an alias to your partner's account. This would allow to use the child's e-mail address to access the Xbox Live profile on the old account. This is the most that can be done sadly, being necessary to create a new account if you want to complete cut the ties between the accounts.

Follow the "Add a new alias to your Microsoft Account" section from this page: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/account-pro...
    Hello,

Thank you Claus for the quick reply.

    Just a couple more questions.

Just so I understand, so I can explain it to him, If I add his new email as a new alias, we then have to make that the primary login?

Once done and a new email is set as primary, how does he log in with his new email on his Xbox?

After we have set it all up and logged into his Xbox under his details if she changes her password for the old email that is now an alias that will not affect his login/gameplay any and she won't have to put her password in at all to his Xbox?

At this point in time her email is under the Microsoft Family this was to ensure he didn't spend all day and night on it. Would I need to add his new email to this or will the restrictions carry from her email even though it is not the primary one anymore? ( As we would like to monitor and help him manage his game playtime even though he is an adult now, he does not understand about times so need something in place to help guide him, now he is not home anymore. The plan was to do this for another year or so just to make sure he doing ok and slowly remove the restrictions until he is removed completely from the Microsoft Family. )

Will he be able to see his mother's emails or will his login for his email not show them even though his email is an added-on email to her account?

Or if he wants to be completely free from her email address he has to start all over again and will lose all games/game pass time/rank and trophies that he has attached to her email account?

Sorry if some of these might seem like silly questions.

What you've mentioned is the correct way of doing things! You can set the Home Xbox on the mother's account, which will then allow the child to play all of Game Pass games from the mother's account subscription.
