Elite Series 2 Doesn’t Stay Powered on Without the USB Cable

I’m having problems with my Elite Series 2 controller, used on my gaming PC. It won’t stay powered on for more than a few minutes after unplugging it from the USB cable. I had my controller plugged up to my computer, through the USB cable, for days. It had at least 100 hours of active charging time. But then I went to unplug the cable so I could test my wireless adapter, and within a few seconds the controller went dead. No lights of any kind. No white light in the middle of the controller, no light on the Xbox logo button. Even holding down the wireless pairing button didn’t do anything; it didn’t even blink any of the lights. The controller was just completely dead. So I plugged the usb cable into a phone charger, and the lights came back on, my controller paired, and worked just fine. But even then, occasionally, the controller would start blinking and disconnect for about 5 seconds and come back on. After a couple of hours of being plugged into the charger, I disconnected it and tried to play wireless again. Again, the controller stayed powered on for a couple of minutes and died. So, I once again plugged the USB cable back into the phone charger and it came on again.

So this isn’t about whether the wireless is working, or about needing to plug it into the computer. The wireless works fine. But the controller has to stay connected to a power source or it dies. Even after the controller has been plugged into power for days at a time, it will only work for a few minutes before it goes dead - no lights whatsoever.

Tomorrow I’m going to take it to the store where I have a protection plan and replace it. I’m only leaving this post because I’ve seen similar posts where Microsoft representatives (or AI chat bots) just copied and pasted a tech support document about how to use a USB cable and how to check the battery indicator. They clearly didn’t actually read or understand the posts. So hopefully this will help people realize it’s not their fault and some of these controllers are obviously faulty.

    :)

Elite Series 2 Doesn’t Stay Powered on Without the USB Cable

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Elite Series 2 controller. Based on the information you provided, it seems like there may be a hardware issue with the controller itself. Since you have a protection plan and plan to replace it, that would be the best course of action to take.

Either the battery itself has failed or the internal charging circuitry. If this is the case, it won't matter how long you leave your controller plugged in, it will never charge.

Series S controller won't power on and is making a buzzing noise when plugged in via USB

    Hello JORDAN W1,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

So far, from the details you provided, you can try the following steps and let us know the result. You can just skip those you have done already.

    Step 1: Check your batteries

Verify that your controller batteries aren’t causing this issue. If your controller won’t power on at all, replace the controller batteries with fresh ones and make sure they’re inserted correctly into the controller.

Note The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 uses a built-in battery, so if you’re using an Elite Series 2, skip this step.

Step 2: Connect your controller to the console with a USB cableYou can use a USB to micro-USB cable to connect your controller to your Xbox. Plug the micro-USB end into the top of the controller, and the USB end into the USB slot on the side or back of the console. The cable will provide both power and a wired connection to the controller.

Note The Xbox Wireless Controller (included with the Xbox Series X|S) and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 use a USB-C cable for charging.

If your controller works when connected to your console with a USB cable, continue to the next step. If it doesn’t work when connected to your console with a USB cable, your controller needs to be replaced.

Elite Controller Series 2 will no longer charge or connect to Xbox or PC?

    Hi,

You can use a controller without a battery if it's connected with a USB cable. If you remove the battery and connect to either a console or PC with the cable, does the controller turn on? interact with the device you connect it to?

If your controller doesn't work, try another cable. The cable for the Series 2 needs to be a USB to USB C cable. The cable needs to be able to send data as well as charge - most cables designed for phones and tablets that use USB C are capable of sending
    data.

If your controller still doesn't power up after changing the cable, then its likely your controller has a fault.

Xbox wireless controller w/adapter Windows10 dead

Hello There ! Please follow the steps bellow to troubleshoot the issue :

Step 1: Connect your controller to the console with a USB cable

You can use a USB to micro-USB cable to connect your controller to your Xbox. Plug the micro-USB end into the top of the controller, and the USB end into the USB slot on the side or back of the console. The cable will provide both power and a wired connection to the controller.

Note The new Xbox Wireless Controller (included with Xbox Series X|S) and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 use a USB-C cable for charging.

If your controller works when connected to your console with a USB cable, continue to the next step. If it doesn’t work when connected to your console with a USB cable, your controller needs to be replaced.

    Step 2: Update your controller

If your controller connects when using a USB cable but doesn't stay connected after removing the cable, reconnect the cable and see if there’s an update available for your controller:

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    2. Under Profile & system, select Settings.
    3. Under Devices & connections, select Accessories.
    4. On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select “” to check the firmware version for your controller.
    5. If it says there’s no update available, your controller is current. If it says “Update,” follow the steps provided.
    6. Once your controller is updated, disconnect the USB cable and try connecting wirelessly again.

    Problems with sync function

You should be able to do it following these steps:

Connect your controller using a micro-USB cable (included with all standard Xbox One wireless controllers and the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit). Standard alkaline batteries won’t be used to power the controller functions while you’re using your controller
    as a wired controller.

If you’re using an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller, connect your controller using a USB-C cable (included with both controllers).

Depending on the type of controller you have, plug the micro-USB or USB-C cable into the power port on the back of the controller then plug the other end of the cable into your Xbox One.

    Hope this helps
