Elite controller series 2 bluetooth fails on pc

Picked up a series 2 controller for the specific purpose of not having to use a dongle that I had to use on my series 1 controller. Worked fine for an hour or two then would disconnect. While disconnecting it wrecked the frame rate of any game I was playing (tried with COD and Overwatch), running on an alienware with an rtx 3070. Before asking, all my drivers are up to date, windows is up to date, and I updated the controller itself through the accessories app before using it. It won't reconnect unless I remove it from my bluetooth devices and re add it. Sometimes it says there's a driver error. I'm aware that I'm not the only person with this issue, and I'm sure it's specific to the controller since I can run my ps5 controller with ds4 windows and it works perfectly without dropping. Love the customizability of this controller, but having to use a dongle or run it wired like a peasant defeats the purpose.

I'm not new to computers, I've built many, I'm comfortable in a command prompt and doing troubleshooting. Curious if there are some conflicts that are known that I'm not finding? I was also using headphones in wired mode that can connect through bluetooth while using the controller (audeze mobius), but that shouldn't really be an issue as it isn't with any other bluetooth controller/device and they were operating in USB mode, not bluetooth.
