Then tell me how businesses such as Gamestop make all of their money? they make a large majority of their profit from used games. The used games sales are a threat as Vaynel elaborated.

Used games are a threat. Are they a significant threat as I said? Or as subtle as Vaynel said? I believe that they are a threat to a studio. Just how big, I don't know

I think it's silly to think a business can make their a significant amount of money primarily off of used games. But a studio can't go under because of used games? Come on now.

    That logic is flawed

  3. Publishers/Developers do this then you might as well say bye bye to more than just used/rented games.

The backlash over this will get so much momentum that it will make even the plague seem welcomed to EA etc.

Can't believe that they would even contemplate committing corporate suicide in such fashion.

For what it's worth: My 2 cents!

    Therein lies the conundrum.

Used games aren't (IMO) as big of a threat as some people make them out to be. Everything (with the obvious 'well duh' exceptions) has a used market... and before someone starts
making the 'video games are different' excuses, no... I don't buy it. The industry may be different, but that can be said about any other industry. They all are different in some way and others have found a way to make it despite used sales.

I know it may ruffle a feather or 2, but if a studio (or dev, etc.) is threatened by used sales... well then they should have done a better job with their game(s). Sad but true.
For w/e reason, their game didn't have enough appeal, or didn't appeal to a broad enough audience (or a combo of both). If it had, there would be droves of people pre ordering it and the season pass, because they just couldn't wait until the price dropped.

It is strange. You hear the grumbling from Publisher's and Development Studios about used games. Then E3 2013 happened. Then GameStop went up in arms about the policy that both Microsoft and S*ny were going to implement (similar to this article title,
and what EA did for online access). There is a reason for that. Used games sales are relevant to stores like GameStop and to Development Studio's.

Pyramid Head there are several games that have "under sold". In part to used game sales. People say it all of the time... "meh, I will wait to buy it used".

  7. "Under-sold?" Such as?

Sounds more like an excuse for bad business strategy. For instance, when a franchise (Tomb Raider) hadn't sold more than 3 million before, why have a budget for a game that is meant for five million? Yeah.

Tomb Raider is a good example. That game should have sold more 3.5 million

I am not justifying THQ's bad business model Pyramid Head. They have only made a few solid games. I am saying for companies like Square Enix that are walking a tight rope. Used Sales hurt.

I am getting the feeling that you don't believe Used Games matter? If that is your point then you and I are at a disagreement. And really shouldn't continue thumping our keyboard or phones.

Name any manufacturer that wouldn't grumble (or at the least have a good reason to) about used sales. I don't think anyone [in their right mind] would argue that it doesn't affect the bottom line. It absolutely does.

Same with Gamestop being up in arms. Again, of course used sales are relevant to everyone involved. The question is; To what degree?

Just using some random, meaningless, for the sake of making a point, numbers. How much of a pay cut would it take before you had to make a few sacrifices? 10%? 15%? Does that mean you wouldn't grumble if it were 5%? If you had the audience of a large group
of your friends [or fans], would you take the opportunity to 'grumble' about a 3% cut, if you thought you could garner support from them that could keep you from losing it?

Here's the kicker. Unlike a pay cut, those used sales have always been there. And yet, the gaming industry survives.

I'm sticking to my guns... used sales will only kill those who fail to plan properly for them, or those who fail to make games good enough to sustain new sales. I've said
"meh, I will wait to buy it used". myself, plenty of times. Want to know what games I HAVEN'T said that about?

Let's just say there are a few too many for me to list... even off the top of my head.

As a consumer, I make decisions about 'value for my money' every day. I have no problem making decisions between a must have day one and a "I will wait to buy used" game. Funny
thing about the used games I buy though... I'm more likely to buy the DLC for them without 'grumbling' much, if at all, if I like the game. A sale they would have lost if I didn't have the choice of buying used or after a price drop, since I would have just
    passed on the game altogether.

  10. "Tomb Raider is a good example. That game should have sold more 3.5 million " It did. Fastest selling and highest selling TR to date. But thats it right there: the market for Tomb Raider was only about what it sold. The only reason why Sqaure has issues
with it is because they don't want to lay blame on their poor performance regarding their mega franchise FF.

Used games can effect a studio. After all used games don't show up as a sold game for the publisher, this means that when they look at sales figures the game wasn't as popular as maybe it actually was.

So the publisher/investors look at sales and see whether it is worth investing as much in the developer's next game, or if it is worth keeping them open to make that next game in the first place.

I don't think used games are the threat that publishers makes out but I do believe that they can be a threat to studios straddling the line.

It's good that they've said it was incorrect. They would have alienated so many people and pretty much tarnish their name.

Still...I'm not interested in this game.
