Editing/changing gamertag

There is a gamertag in my Xbox profile within my Microsoft account. It's really my granddaughter's gamertag; she plays Minecraft on her Kindle, and her uncles can join her games. She now has her own Microsoft account and I want her to be able to keep that gamertag. In the process of giving myself a new gamertag by "editing" the existing one, it tells me that if I change it I won't be able to go back to it.

But will it be "free"? Can my granddaughter (me, really, as she doesn't access these accounts herself at this stage) then give herself that gamertag? Will it become available after a period of time? Or must she start all over with a new gamertag and that one will never be available for anyone to use?

You need MsPoints to change your gamertag to change your gamertag on the xbox Dashboard

go to: Settings > profile> edit profile > gamertag

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Xbox Community. I understand that you want to transfer your granddaughter's Minecraft Gamertag from your Microsoft profile to her new personal account. This is possible, however, there's no guarantee that she can get it once it becomes available because it will be first come, first serve basis.

If you change your gamertag, it will only be available to other users after 37 days. Once it's available, anyone can claim it.

Having said this, I would recommend that she use the same Gamertag with a different suffix (number after the gamertag).

Thank you for your post .I understand you are experiencing an issue with you with a recent gamertag change. If you selected a gamertag but accidentally accepted the changes without verifying your change, you must pay the gamertag change fee to correct it.
Unfortunately, there is no way to edit a gamertag without paying for a change.

You can not change it for free.After your account has been activated for more than 30 days, Go to profile > edit profile > gamertag to change your gamertag. The change gamertag option is no longer accessible on the site .

sign into your account. go to settings, select profile, select edit profile, select gamertag, then change gamertag.
