EA - Star Wars Battlefront Online Features Age Restriction?

So, my <13 yr old child gets the following error when trying to play Star wars Battlefront online:
"You are not allowed to access online features". I was honest when I set up my child's Xbox account and
I control what my child can access via the Xbox Live settings. So, I was a little surprised to read the following EA "FIX" for the issue, since I thought I was already in control of what my child
could and could not play via Xbox Live:

    • While there are many reasons you might see this error when trying to play your game,
it could be due to playing on an underage, or child, account. Make
sure you're playing on an account registered to a user of-age and try again.
It clearly appears that EA blames Xbox. Please see the below link:

    https://help.ea.com/en/article/xbox-underage-account-error-faq/

    Any thoughts:

    • I can see from researching online, that EA "restricts" <13 yr olds from playing online, but, is this an "ERROR" on Xbox's part? It does not appear so. It seems intentional on EA's part.
    • Is EA the only company that does this? My child is not restricted on other games from other companies (as far as I can tell).
    • Why can my child play Titanfall, Rated M, but, not Star Wars Battlefront, Rated T? Both are obviously from EA. So, what is the difference? Has EA relaxed the restriction for Titanfall just to keep the servers full?
    Thank you for any information.

    :)

EA - Star Wars Battlefront Online Features Age Restriction?

There is nothing there saying that EA is blaming Xbox.

The section you have referenced above is for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The issue is actually on EA's side. The EA Account linked to your Xbox profile must be aged 13 or higher to play Battlefront.

Go to www.ea.com and log in

Then click MY ACCOUNT where it shows your name in the top right corner or
    https://myaccount.ea.com/

Once there you will see under BASIC INFORMATION that it has a Date of Birth line (3rd line down). If that date is less than 13 years old the account can not be used with Battlefront.

If you want to update the account click EDIT next to "Basic Information" and update the Date of Birth. If that doesn't work, contact EA Support at
    https://help.ea.com/contact-us

All publishers can do this where you link your Xbox/PlayStation account to their own system for games. EA set it so that when they know the age of the player they prevent minors accounts from playing age restricted content this is to protect them legally.

EA did not develop Titanfall, it only published it.

EA owns DICE who developed Battlefront so had to follow EA's guidelines.

Thank you for the information about the developer/publisher relationship. That explanation clears up the difference between Titanfall and SWB and why I thought it was an error. EA even refers to the issue as an error.

The reason I said "blame" is because EA stated in the above link, "*EA does not have the ability to assist with this type of error as it originates with the Xbox console and its configuration, rather than the game."

I'm curious why EA seems to be the only game developer that put restrictions on their games? SWB is, I guess, the first true EA game I bought.

I was surprised by the age restriction. It's Star Wars. No blood, no gore, no cursing and no chat.

The age restriction is likely due to the age rating of the game - I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the same will apply here in Europe. Eurogamer even asked DICE about the PEGI rating, which is our European rating system (it's rated 16 here,
when the films have never been higher than a 12) - link here:
    www.eurogamer.net/.../2015-11-16-why-is-star-wars-battlefront-a-pegi-16

I'm not sure what the minimum age for a T rated game is, but EA in this instance are clearly thinking higher than 13. I wouldn't be surprised if, in order to keep parity with Europe, it's closer to 16, but in all honesty you'd probably be best off asking
them for more info EA - Star Wars Battlefront Online Features Age Restriction? :)

The ESRB doesn't have as many ratings groups as PEGI and is a suggestion rather than legally binding like PEGI is in the UK and other parts of Europe.

ESRB rating is - T for Teen (13+)

As I say, the blocker is the EA/Origin account Date of Birth. Change the DOB at EA and the problem is solved. As long as you want to allow your child to play a 13+ rated game of course.

EA - Star Wars Battlefront Online Features Age Restriction?

How do you log into your Child's EA account? When I created the EA account on the Xbox, on the Home Screen of SWB, I was asked to put in my own email address (which is logical) for verification/parental consent purposes, since EA already knew the account
would be for a minor (I guess based of the Xbox Live/gamertag info). I then created a username and password for the account and submitted. Once I received the email from EA/Origin, I verified that I was the parent/guardian and that was that. Not once during
did the process did it ask for my child's email address or age.

When you go to ea.com to login, it asks for an email address and not a username. Since no email was assigned to my child's account, I cannot log into the account. If I use the username and password, I get an "Invalid email address" error message. EA did
not send any information or provide a means to me to manage the child account.

I would love to change the age on just the EA account, but, I do not think it is feasible. I read on another forum that I need to change the age on the Xbox Live account and then create a new EA account that is linked to the "now instantly >13 yr old child"
Xbox Live account. Not worth it and I do not want to give my child that much control. We can play online on my account. My child is much better than this old man and I can level up faster.

Thanks again for all the info.

I would love to know if you were able to log in your child with EA to change their DOB... I have the same issue. I can log in as xbox live automatically setup their account with my email address and I have an ea account with my email address too.

You can't as es goes by your xbox age which also can't be changed. The servers will tell you incorrect age and ask you to fix it

Ea and any private servers can set age restriction that is their legal right. For m rated games the restriction is 18+ hence the rating

Similar issue, oh well. My boys are 8 and 9 and do not have much access to anything else but this is star wars, and it doesn't seem like this game is as bad as some others that have gotten by. I like the answer of letting the kid play with my account. I
stink at FPS games on a gamepad, so letting him play mine will be better for me!

  12. Salut tout le monde (= Hi everybody from France) !!!

Similar issue too for my son (15 years old) with a PEGI 16 for Star Wars battle front (single game : ok, but online game : impossible).

In fact, he plays to new COD, Destiny or Battlefield (PEGI 16 or 18) without problem.

The solution : My kid plays with my account.

Seriously, the EA video game policy isn't up to what is STAR WARS for the world.

WIKIPEDIA : Games rated as PEGI 16 will include "more mature and realistic violence against human

    characters".

We speak about a STAR WARS, it's a fantastic awesome movie story and not a realistic story. Do you afraid to Chewbacca, Han Solo or universe of Star Wars ?

Not us, except Jar Jar maybe. ;D

    Game be with you.

    Patrice, a french guy.

EA - Star Wars Battlefront Online Features Age Restriction?

EA has always restricted online play of their games to accounts aged 13 or older, even Burnout Paradise back on Xbox 360. It's not to do with game content, it's simply their policy on multiplayer.

Someone brought up Titanfall: it might simply be because EA only joined that project right at the end, and weren't the publisher from the very beginning, meaning Respawn had control over these things. Expect Titanfall 2 to conform better to the typical EA
    policy.

I'll allow my child to play Star Wars Battlefront on my account, but , I'll be darned if I'll share my account for Titanfall 2. Haha! EA can do what they please, that is true. Perhaps , I'll just stick to non-EA games then. Fallout, Halo, Forza, COD, Metal
    Gear......Battleborn looks good too.
