financial stats, the company earned $195 million by selling extra content for its various games in Q2 2016. During that same period, the company earned $89 million by selling full games digitally. Yeap, you read that right. EA has earned more than
2X more money from Extra Content than from full-length digital games.

I'm thinking that not only will DLC not go away, but it will only get worse with more and more and more and... (you get the idea)

Hi,

Battlefield 3 is not available in a digital format. EA has decided to not make it available on the marketplace digitally (more than likely because it's 2 discs worth of content way more than 8GB). You can only purchase Battlefield 3 from an actual retail store,
not digitally, sorry.

P.S: Battlefield 3 Premium is all of the DLC for a cheaper price than buying it separately. This content is downloaded once you actually have the physical game disc in the in-game store.

 

Will Xbox One games be 100% instant download in the future or will it always be a choice to buy a disc or to download the game?

EA has already posted that they are making more money off of digital than physical copies. EA will be the first company to go all digital.

And. consumer. still got the choice to buy. or not.

 

This doesn't surprise me and like Tzar said, we still have a choice so I'm ok with it.

Take the forthcoming Battlefront. If it runs as smooth as the beta did, I'm still enjoying it a few months after release then I'll be happy to pay for some DLC if it adds to the life of the game.

 

Spot on Tzar. As long as people continue to buy the extra content, they will keep producing and charging for it. You can't really blame them with numbers like that. They'd be leaving money on the table if they didn't. If there was a drop in people buying
it, they might change their model but I don't see that happening. People like more content. They might complain but then also still buy it.

 

So in a year EA only made a million dollars from console games?

That doesn't make sense and when things don't add up it's usually because they're not true.

A number of EA's titles sold over a million copies so this chart appears to be a work of fantasy.

Just goes to show when you want to get people's attention... make something up!

More is good, but would you still be okay with it if they started to cut even more out of the base game to possibly sell to you later? A line needs to be drawn somewhere in my opinion. As it stands there isn't any.

I'm curious - why do you think more is bad? I, for 1, have enjoyed how DLC has extended the life of my games.

 

This is no surprise to me based on what appears to be their new business model i.e. EA Access. Better to give the main game away for free and make money on DLC than make no money at all from second hand game sales. I for one think this works great for EA
and the consumer.

I think EA Access is the best thing since sliced bread. I'm currently playing free 10 hour trials of the new Need for Speed, Fifa 16 and Rory McIllroy golf, and have enjoyed countless hours of gaming from the many full titles that are available free. All
for a measly £20.00 per year. Even if I spend £10, £20 or £30 on DLC for these games then I'm still paying a relatively small price overall for hundreds of hours of gaming fun.

As long as developers don't start leaving content out of a game to sell later (Destiny) then i'm all for more dlc when it's done right.

Bethesda tend to do dlc right which is why i'll probably buy the season pass for Fallout 4.

I'll wait until I see whats being released for Battlefront but I know i'll end up buying it as it's Star Wars.

I tend to wait for dlc to go on sale now before buying it,does depend on what you are getting for your money though.

At the end of the day no one is forcing you to buy dlc but more choice is good.

 

No they're not for a full year but are for more than that. They're for a rolling 12 months with financial quarters so if you put 4 quarters together to get the last 12 months worth of stats.

Oh wait a minute... no it doesn't. it presents 3 quarters worth of stats. Still if you generously guestimate the missing quarter you're looking at 1.3 million console games sold.

As for not including physical copies sold it doesn't specify. There simply isn't enough information available to back the claim up.

@ Brand, I agree there has got to be a line but I guess it will be different for everyone.

Using Battlefront as an example again. Personally it's releasing with enough maps/modes for make it a worth while purchase for me. I've seen others say the opposite, should have more etc so again it's going to be different for everyone I guess.

For me personally, what Bungie did with Destiny was disgraceful! Ok it was an easy one for me as the game holds no interest to me now, find the game boring. What would I have done if it was a game I was playing? I think I would have drawn the line there
because again I think it was a disgrace but I don't knock others for it, if it's worth it to them in the long run then so be it.

What does make me chuckle though and it was mentioned here. How many people have I seen moan about DLC, Season Passes etc ( and not just with Destiny ) yet the very same people have parted with their cash, doesn't make sense to me but hey ho lol

I love Destiny, but I don't agree with the rate at which Bungie / Activision is dispensing the games content like a vending machine.

I haven't bought any new games ever since I got Destiny at launch because quite honestly they weren't interesting to me.

..........

With that being said, I have gotten WAY more value with Destiny (despite its over priced and bare bones DLCs) than paying $66.00 on a couple of games and then losing interest in playing them.
