E74 Is hardware failure. You need to have your 360 serviced. If you have a phat (and it sounds like you do), Microsoft no longer services the original large Xbox 360 consoles, and only services Slims and Super Slims. As these are the official Microsoft forums,
I cannot suggest that you go to a third party for various reasons.

tl;dr, If you have a phat, you're ***, buy a new console.

You can't tell him to 'fix it himself'. It's against the TOS. Not to mention people break it even more and then blame Microsoft. He needs to replace it. To get a proper reflow, it costs about 90 bucks, which is more than actually getting a new refurb console.
So no. Don't open it, don't try to fix it yourself.

Opening your console is against the TOS. Just like modding and hacking. By definition, modding means modifying your system outside of Microsoft's parameters. This means opening, altering, or touching the inside of the system. His console isn't working because
the solder joints aren't completing the circuits. To fix it, a reflow is necessary. This costs money. The equipment to do this costs a lot of money. If you do it wrong or cheap, you cook your console and then you've wasted money and time and have a useless
piece of junk. It's not a terrible problem, but that can be fixed compared to say, blowing up your console with a stick of C4. If you buy a proper referb unit from Gamestop, their units are decent.

You may as well be telling him to modify his console; because that's what he would be doing. It is up to him what he does, but you can't tell him to do that.

You apparently have no idea what they do to properly refurbish and reflow a console. It's done in a reflow oven. Which costs thousands of dollars. They wouldn't create these reflow ovens and charge thousands of dollars if you could do it with a $50 heat
gun. The only one who does towel tricks is apparently you. You spent 0 dollars admitting to breaking Microsoft TOS? Good for you. I have an old console and do not have any modifications made to it. If heatguns didn't damage the board, then there would be no
warnings of boards gone bad. Just because you opened your console and watched a few YouTube videos does not make you knowledgeable about the topic. Working in a repair center with trained techs and proper hardware does.Improperly 'fixing' your console chops
its life in half. If anyone has lost credibility it's you.

tl;dr, don't tell people to open or modify their consoles.
