DVD won't play on Xbox One

My Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs will not play on my Xbox One

This has been brought up on another which has been marked answered. It is not answered, and there has been no response since last February, I think.

Can you tell me what the problem is, and are you able to fix it?

Xbox one won't play DVD!

I have two Ones, neither has EVER played a DVD. It's a known issue that they don't seem concerned with fixing. I've tried over 300 discs. All correct region, mastered discs, discs that play in a 360 and PS3 just fine, and support says "it must be your discs
that are the problem".

Xbox one won't play DVD!

dvds are playing audio only. I just spent over $500 on a system that doesn't seem to work as advertised. Frustrating at best.

Do you get an error code when you try to watch it?

No error code, the screen just stays black. Every other dvd or blu-ray that I have works just fine.

After a little searching here and there it seems as if it's a two step issue. First of all the LOTR DVDs apparently can be a little glitchy and don't always work according to some third party forums. However another thread on these forums seem to indicate
that the Xbox system doesn't support them and there is an internal bug that means they won't play. So for now, it looks like you'll need to try another DVD system to watch them. Reference here;

Mine don't work either. Just had to plug in an old DVD player after reading up on this. How has this not been addressed yet? This has been a known issue for years.

I don't buy the "defect" story. The dvds literally work in any other DVD player I've tried.

Same issue. Not a single one of any of the entire box set will play. Find it odd. Xbox tried to tell me it was aregional issue. No. It's all region one and plays on my 360 just fine. And my old laptop. So why in the world will it not play on my Xbox one?
Conspiracy to force me to buy the "digital" version? Idk but it makes me grrr.

Up until the most recent update, my LOTR extended blu rays were the ONLY thing that would play on the blu ray player. That's all that I have been watching for weeks. The blu ray player is a black screen for ALL my movies, both DVD and blu ray and I can't
find any support for this issue online. Extremely frustrating.

I'm also seeing the same problem. Blu-Rays and other DVDs play fine but the LotR DVDs show a black screen and then a "Blu Ray player failed to start" error message. No error code was displayed. I powered the X Box 1 off and back on and no change. The
box went through an update earlier today so it should have the latest software.

You've said you've tried blu-ray discs and Xbox One discs but have you tried DVD discs?

Xbox 360 games are on DVD and my guess is that DVD won't play either.

The reason why they won't play is that DVD diode for reading these discs has failed. Other discs work because that laser diode is still working.

Try a DVD disc. If it does not work you'll need a repair.

I've even tried in an older Xbox one day one edition and I get the same problem. Other store bought dvds and Blu rays work fine. Netflix dvds won't play.

Can you confirm if your console can read DVD discs?

Xbox 360 games are on DVD and Xbox One games are on Blu-Ray. The Xbox One's Blu-ray drive has a separate laser to read DVD's, if it has malfunctioned, Xbox 360 games can't be read and the digital download for BC games won't start.

To test this out, try playing a DVD movie disc. In all likelihood these films won't play and that will confirm drive malfunction. If this is the case you'll need your console repaired/replaced.

You’re welcome and thank you for the update. With the error code that please follow the steps below from Xbox Support:

“To resolve this problem, eject the disc and restart the Xbox One console:

Eject the Blu-ray Disc from the console.

1. From Xbox Home, with Blu-ray in the big application tile, move the focus to the Blu-ray tile, and then press the Menu button on your controller.

2. Select Quit. If "Quit" is not available, the app is already closed.

3.Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

4. Select Profile & system > Power > Restart console > Restart.

5. After the console restarts, reinsert the Blu-ray Disc.”
